This year it was a brilliant red in the spring (I live in New England) and has about 12 to 18 fruit on it, To say the least I have been pleasantly surprised. I'm not sure of the variety of the shrubs but they sound like yours. Both are in sunny locations but poor (acidic in our area) soil.
