I also saw peonies, irises, and delphiniums blooming in may. The kousa as well. Not sure the cultivar but it was a mighty happy kousa. Maine is a zone or two colder than I am in Tennessee so their bloom times are later. Not sure how it would relate to where you are in Illinois. Kousas are highly recommended even for my neck of the woods.
