Summer Pets

You know it's really summer when your goldens go to the groomer and come home looking very different.
So different in fact, that even the cat did not recognize CeCe and BJ. (Bella thinks she must be in every picture with CeCe)
BJ looks a bit embarrassed with his 'nakedness' doesn't he? But boy oh boy, he has his ball so he is happy.
Don't they look nice and cool now?

How about your pets-are they ready for the summer? What do you do to make your pets comfortable....

in the garden....

  1. Is this the way to avoid the spring shedding thing, Tina?

  2. My goodness what a difference! Mine are lucky to get a bath! Well that may be a bit of an exaggeration, but they do get stinky in the summer heat.

  3. Hello there Tina !
What a gorgeous boy he is now .. and yes .. dogs love getting freshened up for summer : )
The girls stay pretty much the same and I know they appreciate the AC on our hot humid days .. just by their little cat smiles ? LOL .. summer has hit you guys down there already and I just had my daffs bloom ? LOL

  4. Hello again - sweet pictures! We do nothing. Both our dog (an irish setter) and cat (huge thick coat but moggie so normal shape haed) sort themselves out. The cat grooms fastidiously for several hours a day. And then deposites the hair all over the house during the rest of the day. The dog has a special personal routine of rolling in long grass, paddling in stinky black mud and wiping her face on the furniture after eating if we don't catch her! We do comb burrs and so on out of each of them but no more than that.

  5. Now that must feel cooler! And a lot lighter weight wise.

  6. Goodness! Not only does BJ look naked, he's changed color! He went from yellow to white!

  7. Always nice to get that spring haircut! I think it's granddog Allie's turn soon!

  8. Morning all! Rainy here. That is ok. I just wish I could save it for the summer.

Donna, No, they still shed but it is less noticeable with so much less hair-and cooler. Plus if they get bugs (they are treated) I can see them pretty easy. I am having trouble reading your blog. On both Blotanical and with my link.

Janet, Most can't recognize these dogs and tell me it makes them look so much younger. Especially BJ, he went from red to tan. A big change indeed.

Joy, it makes such a big difference in their lives. It gets so hot here. They have a little pool outside they jump in (or my fish pond when the pool is not filled), but they do need the shave and a/c for survival. Glad you have it too for the kitties!

Emily, I just love your pretty red Irish setter! Such a beautiful dog. I never knew about shaving dogs until I saw a golden shaved. Never seen an Irish shaved though. You have to smile at the thought.

Beckie, I hope so as it gets so hot down here for these guys. They don't handle heat well. Very stressful for them.

Linda, Yup-definitely time! Getting too hot lately. Sure saves on hair everywhere.

Dawn, Yes he did. He is the color changing dog for sure. No one can recognize him after his shave.

  11. Cats grow thicker fur in winter and shed it in summer. This is particularly dramatic in feral cats who live outside all year. My own cats go out for a bit year-round, but enjoy the heat or A/C inside for the most part!

  12. Hi Tina, Aggie gets brushed frequently but a trip to the groomer would give here a heart attack. She hates to have strangers handle her. Chalk it up to one more of her neuroses.

  13. Looking good Tina!

George got his bath in the backyard on a warm sunny day a couple of weeks ago. After his bath he was brushed for an hour, and I'm sure I brushed two or three puppies-worth of fur out of his coat. He's still shedding like crazy, leaving tumbleweeds all over the house!

  14. Such healthy looking dogs! Do they act different when you get them home?

  15. We don't have puppies but the cat is shedding his winter coat like crazy...or maybe it's just that cats shed all the time! I love the buzz cut on your guy! He looks so happy smiling at you while you take his photo. There is nothing like a pet's love. gail

  16. They both look so good and happy. I need to do this to all the cats around here!

  17. Oh, Tina, I haven't even thought about such a thing with Sophie yet! I'm still trying to reinforce the things we're learning in "puppy school" and to keep her from chewing up everything in my house! Her fur is pretty short, so I don't think we have to worry about a haircut yet. My daughter, though, takes Coconut, her Pomeranian, to the groomer every summer for a real haircut--he looks so different then, but much cooler.

I enjoyed seeing your dogs today. I'm looking forward to the day I can let Sophie out to garden with me, without worrying she will dig up everything I just planted:)

  18. I think BJ is smiling in the before picture! :-)

  19. Thanks all!

Darla, Just a bit sheepish for a quick sec while the other two dogs and cat get used to them.

We surely must love our pets to do all the brushing, bathing and loving and not to mention the patience we give them!

  20. He's so cute! Is that who's in your profile picture? It's funny how animals act after getting groomed sometimes, almost embarrassed. My little white dog is getting groomed Tuesday and I'll show a picture of her. She's only white after her grooming, then she's our rolling in dirt or other yucky stuff in the garden.

  21. They both will feel better I am sure but what a change in BJ. Bella wants in but she could have smiled as she looks kinda silly. LOL However when Christy gets in on Sat I will show it to her and know she will not care how silly she looks!!! Then in 3 weeks Christy will see her baby in person. Since we are down to only one dog and it being a Boston Terrior, her grooming needs are pretty close to nil. Terri-Lynn's short haired Chihuahua is okay and one of the long haired is not too bad but Moose does get quite bad so she takes him every so often for a haircut (he just went 2 weeks ago) . I tease her that her 3 boys are not dogs anyway but a cat so when he gets a haircut I tell her it just shows more that he is a cat!!

  22. Catherine, For sure my baby is BJ. A perfect dog by anyone's standards. I simply adore him. I can't wait to see your baby groomed!

Mom, You are lucky to have a Boston terrier-short haired and all. They are so cute! Terri's, yup, more like cats than dogs. Shall we call them dats? A combo of both? I know how she loves those guys. I saw one at the vets recently and boy did this guy love his baby of 14 years. Old gal she was. Quite friendly too. He said he'd never seen such a friendly chihuahua. Me neither:)

  23. How cute they look after their fur cuts! As you know we clip our kitties. Clipping day, the fur does fly around here but the Saint and I are persistent and we win in the end with our little wiggle butts. lol... My kitties are coal black before clips then become gray afterwards. It keeps them from getting furballs and hacking them up which sounds painful for them when happening. Plus keeps the fur down in the house…

  24. Tina, you just reminded me to book Stella in for a similar trim. BJ looks much happier if a bit embarrassed. Stella is like that too. On really hot days I hose her before our walk and take her for a swim.

  25. Aren't they cute? My dogs are short haired enough they don't get any special treatment, but it's pretty funny to see the before and after shots of the haircuts.

  26. Hi Tina, your pets do look very much cooler. It has been somewhat cool here after that initial heat wave at the end of April, thankfully. Hope your babies don't get cold! Our cats have no change with the season. If we shaved Hazel, she would disappear, she is all hair and no body. :-)

  27. Fortunately I don't have any pets who need grooming other than nails now. My previous dog Pepper who was part poodle had to be shaved each summer or he would of overheated. Your dogs look mightly pleased with their new haircuts. :)

  28. They do look cooler for sure. How sweet - wish we had dogs again. After we had Schatzee put to sleep last year because she was old and sick we decided not to get another dog as much as we loved them. Now she's up on the back of the property with our first one Prissy. They just had fleas non stop living up here and no matter what we did they would not go away once they would go outside that's all it took. I read that fleas are in the fir trees so it just isn't fair to have our babies if they can't be comfortable. I had to bathe them every other day and use Skin So Soft to keep them from drying out. They were definitely the cleanest little dogs around! LOL Enjoy yours - your so lucky to have them.
Hey Tina - my new Heuchera 'snow angel' is blooming! Yippee!!!

  29. I bet he's easier to keep clean with less hair!

In summer I give the horses electrolytes; they sweat so much they need it.

  30. My mutts go to get groomed every two weeks. I like them cut short.

  31. Your babies sure look cooler. Do they have a personalty change when they have a hair cut?
Been real hot here, no rain, which we need.
I managed to get the azaleas trimmed. Took me 2 days. Now to get it all cleaned up.

  32. What seems to happen here is I spend the money on a professional groomer and then my poodle gets loose, finds a sticky stinky substance to roll in and contaminates herself! She just doesn't like smelling good.

    These guys look very dapper.

  33. Getting the doggies their summer cut ranks right up there with getting your new pair of tennis shoes as a sure sign of coming summer.

    ReplyDelete
  34. Looks like really happy dogs. Bella is one beautiful dog.

    ReplyDelete
  35. They all look so happy! I never took my dogs to the groomer because the one had a short coat, the other I used to trim the coat myself, but I remember how frisky my mom's Maltese always was when she got her summer "puppy clip," although once the cut was too short & we had to put her in doll clothes for week.

  36. I had no idea you had to save golden retrievers in the summer! Luka wants to go outside and play in the grass. She keeps running outside every time the door opens, and I have to chase after her. She likes to eat the grass and three-leaf clovers. During the winter, she stayed away from the door and had no interest outside. I guess the warm spring weather is inviting to her!

  37. Your CeCe and BJ look so cute!

    ReplyDelete
  38. omg Tina, I have a neighbor that would absolutely keel over knowing you have them shaved for the summer!! She raised Goldens and is very fastidious about their "feathers," etc. Of course it isn't near as hot (and very low humidity) here. I'm sure your dogs are much more comfortable this way.

    ReplyDelete
  39. What a trim1 They must be feeling much more comfortable now. Cute photos!

    ReplyDelete
  40. I'm in the group that enjoyed the photos! My neighbor shaves her golden lab mix doggie every summer: it gets hot here. Not only does this allow her dog to keep cooler, she says it's easier to keep track of skin rashes and fleas (and Sweetie looks like a big stuffed animal, so cute).

My own summer thing is to leave plenty of water out, though the funky water in the saucers under my plants seems to be preferable to the clean. Minerals?

I'd be curious to know what form horse electrolytes come in.

  41. Thanks everyone. I think the dogs are enjoying their shave for sure-though no hot weather here it is a coming. Have a great day!
