Some Whimsy For the Garden and Summer Celebration

How about some alliums with the daylilies?
Or sunflowers with the sedum?

It is really something what you can make from a few neat utensils and farm implements just laying around....

in the garden....

There is a very important date coming up for those of us in Tennessee, especially those who have access to Jackson Tennessee. This Thursday, 9 July 2009 is the annual Summer Celebration extravaganza at the University of Tennessee's Agricultural Research Station, 605 Airways Blvd, Jackson TN 38301. You won't want to miss this wonderful event. An entry fee of $5 is all you have to pay in order to sit in on informative garden seminars, visit cool plant and garden vendors, and tour the wonderful gardens on this site. Do check out their website so you can plan your day. It is usually a long and most rewarding day 'in the garden'. P.S. There are air conditioned buildings:) Festivities start at 10 am. This is the one garden related event I make sure to not to miss each year. Have fun!

  1. I loved the sunflower motif. Speaking of which, my son planted a couple of sunflowers in our garden and they've blossomed beautifully, but he was away for a week on a school trip and they're wilting now. Poor little things. We already told him to get out in the garden and fix his flowers.

That Tennessee celebration sounds fun. Many thanks.

    Greetings from London.

  2. Those big dark balls are really fun-- are they really bowling balls? no.... I love a little whimsy in the garden. Sounds like a nice event to check out.

  3. You just have to have fun in the garden or it is a cold formal plot of plants with no heart .. I love putting little or large pieces in pockets of the garden to make you smile .. love the balls and the 'sunflower' : )

  6. Good morning all!

ACIL, You let me know if your son fixes those sunflowers as he will make a million bucks and I want to be in on it:)

Janet, Oh yes, most definitely bowling balls. Three of about 100 I have here. I love them in this spot as they are show up so well against the fence from the house.

Joy, My thoughts exactly. Gotta let loose a bit in the garden every now and then.

Marnie, Gardens are great for repurposing. The sunflower is made from a farm tiller part? I guess that is what it is. They are fun.

Thanks Racquel, I have a bunch of it for sure so I have to enjoy it. More tomorrow too.

On my way out-everyone take care.

  7. I enjoy seeing what people come up with from old farm implements and other recycled items. I always think, "now why didn't I think of that?"

  12. Hi Tina --beautiful morning today:) My kiddos always remember your garden with the whimsy --they thought you had really "neat" stuff. Pretty good if they can remember that:0) Hope you have a wonderful day.

Hi Lola --have a super day --I'm hoping to get grocery shopping. Lil Bundle and I went out walking early this morning to enjoy the birdies and trees. He peeks out of his stroller at them --well, maybe I think he does, hahaha.

Hi Nina, Jean, Dawn and Skeeter -the summer is moving so fast this year --enjoy your day!

  13. Yes, I love it! and you don't have to worry about the sunflower and the sedum blooming at the same time! (the sunflowers seem to be taking forever this year)

    Have fun at the extravaganza!

  14. Whimsy is a great thing that adds a lot to a garden and makes it non stuffy. I love the "alliums". You were lucky to get 3 all the same color with no breaks in them.

  15. Oh darn I meant to say hi to Lola and I gather from some comments that tomorrow you will be away so I just wanted to send some good luck wishes your way.

Also a big hi to Anonymous.

  16. Those are some cool alliums! I love those types of whimsy in a garden. It's what makes it personal.

  17. I love garden whimsy but sometimes get voted down from adding it here. I guess it's good to keep it semi-minimal, so we can actually see the plants! I love your bowling ball alliums and whatever you used to make the sunflower, great idea. I saw bowling balls used as a path edging in one garden, it made me laugh every time I walked by.

  19. I love whimsy objects like that in the garden, but I can't seem to get the hang of putting them in my own garden without it looking "junky." I see your garden ornaments and other bloggers and I think they look so fantastic and wonder why I can't do that.

  20. I have seen these but never got any and wouldn't know where to put them as my sanctuary is stuffed now.

  21. Five bucks is all??! Dang if that ain't almost worth the gas money it'd take me to drive down!! Y'all sure are lucky to have that Ms. Tina. And guess what? My article for Wednesday's paper is about whimsy in the garden. And you've inspired me to write a new blog post about it too.

  23. That sounds like a great day Tina and a lot of bang for your five dollars. Wish I could go. Love your garden art too.

  24. Tina, you have the most unusual alliums and sunflowers out there! It sounds like the event will offer lots more these unusual species... Have a great time!

  25. Those yellow daylilies are Hyperion, aren't they? They look lovely with the red.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Hi all! I've been so busy lately I barely have time on here. Once things slow down perhaps more time. It didn't help that the Internet was out for a while last night.

Sweetbay, You bet they are Hyperion! My favorite daylily by far. All the flashy colors cannot make up for this wonderful, reliable FRAGRANT cultivar. I have it everywhere here. In fact, today is a new garden for Hyperion so I'm heading to the garden....

  29. While driving through the mountains of Virginia, I spotted several places with these fun type works of art for sale outside. Do you think I could get the Saint to stop for me to check them out? Well, no! He can be such a speed demon while on a trip. Arggggggg…
