Red Beard

By: Skeeter

Red Beard lives in my Georgia Garden. No, not the pirate but the plant.
Husker Red Beard Tongue (Type: Herbaceous, Family: Scrophulariaceae) is putting on a show for me right now.
The stems of Green and Deep Red are pretty enough but the late spring blooms are an eye catcher as well.
I added this plant a few years ago and it has dealt with Soggy and Drought conditions, heat of the summer and freezing cold as well. It will grow 2-3 feet tall and 1-2 feet wide while in the full sun.
It is hardy in zones 3-8 and attracts Butterflies but does not seem to attract the deer or rabbits. That is always a plus in my woodsy garden! I basically planted Red Beard and have left it alone. I don't fertilize it or anything. I just let nature takes its course as I do with most my plants. RED BEARD is a great plant to have, In the Garden...

Note: I will be out of the net while helping our friend celebrate her birthday. Chat with you when I can...

  1. Hey there Skeeter girl !
I have these beauties in my garden too .. in fact I posted about it a couple of days ago because its foliage was so pretty with my gold creeping Jenny .. they are great plants and I wouldn't mind adding more .. you are right about just leaving them to their own devices .. they are self sufficient for sure (good lord .. I can't spell check this and I only had one cup of coffee !!!)

  2. Wonderful plant if you can grow them! Love the color.

I used to grow quite a few penstemon with great success, then it's like the world changed overnight and I can barely get one to survive here now. I have a few 'Electric Blue' but they are disappointing as soon as it rains a bit.

  5. We have had people donate these for our Learning Garden sale, but it is always too early for them to be in bloom. Very nice plant, thanks for posting blooms and new foliage. Looks like one everyone should have.

  8. I love beard tongue. My Husker Red isn't blooming yet, but its foliage is a deep dark burgundy! Yay, spring!

  9. Hi Skeeter, that does look very much like the cultivar P. 'Husker Red'! Aren't the Penstemon's amazingly tough creatures? They bloom their hearts out and self sow like mad. I especially like the evergreen, everred foliage. Gives nice winter interest.

  14. Penstemons have become my latest favorite perennial. My Smooth Beardtongue native is currently in full glory. I love the burgundy on the foliage of yours though. Nice plant!

  15. Do you know TyTy Nursery in Georgia?
    4723 U.S. Hwy. 82 W.
    TyTy, GA. 31795

I never visit the actual location, not sure how big is the GA nursery, usually order online. I notice not all online orders are shipped from the same nursery/location.

  18. Sounds like this Red Beard is just about the perfect plant! I like anything that isn't fussy about wet or dry feet, and pretty blooms to boot.

Glad to see some of your mystery plants were identified. You can always count on garden bloggers to have the information you need!

  19. Skeeter, came to your blog by way of Randy and Jamie, Creating our Eden. What a great blog. I have enjoyed the phots and descriptions. I especially liked the Red Beard. The blooms with the deep rich color in the bloom and on the pistol are incredible.

  20. I also have this wonderful plant in my garden. Planted several years ago it has self seeded in several spots. Like you, I have done nothing but let it grow.

  21. Hello Everyone! I hope you all had a nice weekend. We had a great time in Atlanta helping our friend celebrate her birthday. We attended the Geranium Festival and saw some beautiful Geraniums in the quaint town-square of McDonough. Lots of garden ideas in my head now as well...

Veujardin, I have not visited this nursery. I usually go to local Garden Centers...

Jimmy and Wade, Welcome to "In the Garden" Tina is our Master Gardener with a few of us jumping in to Post on different locations from Florida to Maine. We have a lot of fun on here talking about all types of neat things from gardens to our families! Thanks for stopping by...

My niece is here on a visit and I am so excited to get to play Aunt for the week. Hope the weather holds out so we can get to the lake. But quit a nip in the air today!

  22. Nip is right Skeeter. I was totally shocked when I opened the door. But nice for me as I don't do the heat thingy very well.
We did get some much needed rain. So now I will just add fertilizer to the rain water & feed all my babies.

  23. Still nippy today also Lola! Windy as well and we were hoping for a boat ride with the sunny skies but not sure a boat ride would be nice in this nippy wind. Burr... Coats, blankets and hot chocolate on the boat. Hum, now that is an idea. LOL
