Peony

BY SKEETER
In May, I spotted this beautiful Peony in Greenwood Cemetery while visiting my hometown in Tennessee.
A beautiful peony that has been in this spot for many years.
Near by this beautiful Peony, one will also find the grave of Frank Sutton, AKA:  Gunnery Sergeant Carter of Gomer Pyle USMC. Both of these sightings bring back fond memories of my childhood. Sgt. Carter, Gomer Pyle and PEONY, In the Garden...

  1. Catching up ... I DO ♥ peonies! (And ladybugs & butterflies.) What a spring we're having, huh?

    1. Spring is a mere memory for us now Rebecca. We have gone into steamy summer mode here in GA.....

  2. It's a beautiful peony! At first I thought it was in your garden. I think peonies and baptisia are classic cemetery plants. Probably because they last so long. I remember going with my paternal grandfather to my grandmother's grave and him planting peonies. A poignant memory indeed.

  3. I have a peony hedge. I love peonies which remind me of my grandmother. I think peonies are a wonderful memorial flower because they last as long as our memories.

    1. Lola, I had luck with mine the first two years and now they are getting smaller each year. I should move them to a more sunnier spot but Tina says they really do need a cold winter and we just don't have regular cold winters here... Sigh...

    1. My grandparents are buried in this particular cemetery. Drove by to say hey and we also went to visit my other grandparents in yet another cemetery while I was back in my hometown. I like to drive through those cemeteries as they are old and so full of interesting stones and history...

  7. I think we will have to make do with rosemary for a cemetery plant here in Florida. It's not cold enough for peonies. I do miss them! And who could forget Sgt. Carter? He and Gomer were the perfect comedic pair. In my mind's eye and ear, I still see the Sarge getting fired up about something Gomer did and hear his gruff voice chewing the guy out. They don't make TV shows like that anymore. Such a shame. There's a channel here called ME TV (Memorable Entertainment Television). I find myself watching that programming more than just about any other except for PBS.

  8. I think that show was on here in Australia, although we didn't get TV until the year of the queen's coronation, 1953. Like walk2write, I am used to rosemary for remembrance, probably because of the weather.

  12. I do fondly remember the TV show and also my row of peonies. The move from our old house in the sun to the new one in the woods next door ended my raising peonies. Now its a new shady challenge and fond memories of the sunny plants...:)
