The Pot Man, Mr. Fix-it and Father's Day

From In the Garden

Meet the Pot Man, aka Mr. Fix-it's alter ego, the Fisherman. He sits by the bathtub pond with his pole forever in his hands hoping for a bite from the small goldfish swimming around in the pond. One day perhaps he'll catch a fish-who knows?

I've seen 'pot men' in all the garden magazines and even online and had been desiring to make one for quite some time. My pot man is modeled after my husband and if you look closely and squint your eyes you might see a resemblance to Mr. Fix-it (those who know him). Mr. Fix-it loves to fish, always wears plaid shirts, has blue eyes and a big mustache and usually has a smile on his face-just like my pot man.

If you are thinking of making one of these I can tell you they are not real easy to make. Let me give you my number one lesson: go with smaller pots for the arms and legs than you think you'll need. Pots get mighty heavy and awkward to handle when all put together with the nylon rope. Once a pot man is put into place you might wish to save yourself trouble by picking a good spot-one where your pot man will not ever have to move again-they are not easy to place or move.

From In the Garden

Since the Pot Man is modeled after my dear husband and he gets very little blog time, I thought it only appropriate to say Happy Father's Day to him on here and to tell him how awesome he is every single day of the year! He is the best husband and father....

Happy Father's Day to all Fathers!

  6. I love your customized pot man. I have two I got from a garden center already assembled. They are smaller than your guy and not customized. You have inspired me to paint overalls on my guys.
Happy father's day back at ya.

  7. Your Man looks very comfortable and pampered in that last picture. It's about the only way I could be coaxed outside in this hot, hot weather!

The Pot Man is clever. I can sort of imagine the weight and awkwardness of assembly at his size! Thanks for passing on lessons learned. And happy Father's Day to the special man in your life.

Rebecca, It has been hot indeed. I can barely work outside but it makes the inside ever so nicer.

Dawn, Spur of the moment thingy. I'm not posting tomorrow as this was the post. Hope your day was great with JOAT.

Dirty Girl Gardening, Glad you like him.

Skeeter, I sure liked that photo too. We had just gotten it from his parents and this was like the trial run. A new thing for sure. Hope you had a great day.

Carla, He was definitely enjoying himself with the Jimster though the picture was taken a few years ago.

  14. I hope Mr. Fix-it had a great Father's Day! Great job on Mr. Pot Man, Tina--he's awesome, and yes, he does look a little like your husband in the photo. This sounds like one of those projects that looks easier to do than it actually is.

  18. I do see the resemblance:)

This is the first pot-person I've ever seen. What a cute idea. Must have cost you a fortune in terra cotta. Since it breaks so easily, I know why you wouldn't want to move it often.

  23. I've seen these pot people quite a bit in magazines too ~ good for you making one! You did an excellent job. I love the comparison between the pot man & the real one. Sounds like you have a winner of a hubby.

Now too bad I don't have a hot tub ~ that looks super inviting!
