Bloom Day January 2011-Hedgehog Aloe and Bulbs!

Hedgehog Aloe Bloom
Ever see a hedgehog aloe (Aloe humilis 'Hedgehog') bloom? Me neither but I think it is pretty cool; especially since blooms are fairly nonexistent here in my home and garden in January. You might be like me and wonder what the heck is a hedgehog aloe? I asked myself the same question last March when I came upon some great specimens at the Nashville Lawn and Garden Show. The price was right so a pot came home with me that very day. The aloe was easy to divide so some snippets of my plant went home with my companions-shhh-it's a secret-save money by buying a big plant then sharing with your friends.

The aloe spent the summer outside receiving little to no attention from me. What a trooper it was in the full sun and dry conditions we experienced last summer. As the weather cooled I brought the aloe inside and set it on a plant stand in my living room. Walking by it one day I noticed a few stalks. Huh? What is that I thought? It took a few months but finally the bloom has shown itself. I won't go so far as to say the bloom is pretty but I do love the color.

I also have some paperwhites blooming in the kitchen. These are splendid bulbs for growing inside the house and I so enjoy the smell, though the Jimster states they smell like cat pee. I don't see where he gets this idea at all.

Lastly I have some hyacinths that are very close to blooming. I purchased both the paperwhites and hyacinths as mark down bulbs at the end of the season. I had the hyacinth forcing vases left over from last year (purchased from Rural King in a kit for a mere $1 per!) The hyacinths are doing fabulously and will soon begin perfuming my computer room. I really enjoy any blooms inside the house this time of the year when it is so drab outside.

There isn't much else blooming inside the house and nothing is blooming outside. I am surprised there is nothing blooming outside because by this time last year the mahonia was blooming. It is nowhere close this year. The greenhouse has several blooms but I'll be talking about it and those plants in a later post so for now I just want to wish you many blooms....

in the garden....this cold January day.

  1. That's an amazing aloe bloom - love! I've had aloe plants a long time that never blooomed - yours must be very happy - looks a bit like kniphofia.

  2. Tina,

Glad to see you back! Never even thought of an aloe blooming very cool! One inch of snow here I believe we were lucky this time.

  3. I used to have an aloe plant, but I've never seen a hedgehog aloe before--what an interesting bloom! Those paperwhites are so pretty, too; you've reminded me that I still haven't set out the hyacinths yet. If I put them on their vases today, I wonder how long it will take them to bloom?

Glad to see you back, Tina; I hope you had a wonderful holiday with lots of time to spend with your family.

  4. Morning Tina, how cool indeed! It is a pretty bloom with the red tinged edges.
Your Hyacinths are going to be spectacular....Wish I had done that with a few that I bought. hmmm---maybe while we are out.

  5. Beautiful aloe! I've never heard of it, but then I've got a lot to learn about succulents. Did you know there's a whole group of garden bloggers who specialize in them? Julie of A Succulent Life is one of my go-to friends for info.

Those paperwhites do have a strong scent that some people consider downright nauseating. Cat pee, though? I would love to study how people differ in their sense of smell. Do you suppose there's much demand for that kind of job?

  6. Never seen an aloe bloom like that - it is very cool! You are in for a treat with those Hyacinths. But I'm with Jimster on the paperwhites.

I'm trying an amarilys for the first time this year - it should be open in few days!

  8. Nice! We definitely don't have much in bloom. I like what you did with the hyacinths. I may have to try that. Let me know when you're going to the Lawn and Garden Show in Nashville and we'll try to meet you.

  9. Good morning all!

Cyndy, I was shocked that this one bloomed. A very nice treat though. It might just be the type.

Randy-thanks! Yes, the aloes are most neat. Hang tough in the snow. It is snowing here again! And the kids actually went to school. Woohooo! It has been an issue for seniors and high schoolers having their exams delayed. A real mess.

Hi Rose, That hedgehog aloe is so durned pretty even without the bloom. All my friends at the show loved it so we shared it. Mine is the only one that bloomed but I'll watch theirs over the next few years. Thanks for the welcome back. I am going to cut back on blogging because I tell you I so enjoyed not doing it. Does that sound awful? I hope not. I like to blog but just want more freedom in my life and there is so much more than sitting on a computer. Never thought I'd say that but oh well. We'll see how it goes.

Janet, Yup! Not too late for the bargain bulbs. I just potted these up a week before Christmas. Hope you find some be careful in the snow.

W2W, Last year I adored the paperwhite smell but for some reason they smell different this year. Yes, I think there would be a demand for 'smellers' but I think the jobs few and far between but you never know!

Jen, You'll love the amarylis. I'll let the Jimster know someone agrees with him and I'm sure he'll appreciate it but those flowers just have to stay!

Bangchik, You are so right about the roots. They are so cool and perfectly visible. I keep worrying if they get enough nutrients but so far so good. Glad you like them!

Dave, It's ever so easy with the hyacinths. The trick is finding the vases. I'll be sure to email you about the show once it gets closer. So far Vonna is coming again and I'm sure Geri and Naomi will too. We had such a good time last year. Can't wait!

  10. Neat aloe! I especially love your paperwhites and the jars. Enjoy your plants. I have some African violets providing a bit of color, but most of my indoor plants are resting right now too.

  12. So, so nice to see you back. I have an Aloe that blooms just like that in the yard. It was labeled Soap Aloe. I have no idea about Aloe though. Anyway, the hummingbirds love, love the blooms. Those Hyacinths looks so cool lined up like that.

  13. Jeanne, I finally broke down and bought a small African violet. I've never had luck with them blooming before. Any tips?

Sweetpea, Glad you like it! Too cool on having your own blog. I think it's a wonderful thing for kids! Wish mine would start one too.

Darla, How wonderful to have aloe blooms in the garden! I can see where hummers would love those tubular flowers.

  14. Funky aloe flower! I was wondering how you’d manage a bloom day post after all your snow. Keep warm. We just got a half a foot of snow in 3 hours and it's still coming down hard.

  15. Sarah, They say it is going to be quite a No'easter so hunker down!

  16. Wow, I have always had aloes and big ones that trail way down in a hanging pot but I have never seen one bloom. Maybe I will change the way I mistreat mine and hope to get a bloom but before I stop mistreating it I will have to research them and see if there are only certain ones that bloom.

I love, love, love the paperwhites and I agree with Bangchik on even the roots are very neat from the hyacinths. Nice post for us to enjoy Tina. Thanks!!

Finally, after making a check every morning, a GREAT day to finally find a post!!!! I am suffering from withdrawal I think. LOL I also miss my other friends, even if we don't talk everyday, at lest I see their names under the comments or at least know they are there reading, sharing the post with me. Hi girls...you know who you are but hey, there is still 1 missing today. Come on girl and get here!!!!

Have to laugh again as my word verification is twinc, made me think of the twins.

  17. Good morning Mom! Sorry I've been taking a break. It is mainly for you I am posting. While I so enjoy posting and sharing my garden I've been doing other things which has been nice. I am going to slow down on blogging though. Probably only on Wednesdays for a while though I may pick it back up as spring comes up closer. We'll see. I guess my priorities have changed. I so love the blog for its record and for talking with you and everyone else but it is time consuming. I'll never completely leave it but need a slow down. Okay? You will simply love next Wednesday's post. It will be so fantastic for you and for me as a scrapbook of sorts. Not much gardening in it. Lots of love this snowy morning!

  18. The blooms look great! I miss seeing my aloe blooming, and I think it will be long before the current has a flower.

  19. Oh, oh I neglected to share with you...the wheatgrass is growing not just inside, BUT inside my new greenhouse!!!

  20. Awesome Darla! It is a very nice grass to have growing anywhere I think. Congrats on the greenhouse!

  21. Hello Everyone!!!

What a pretty flower and I had no idea that Aloe blooms. Learn something new everyday:-) Any bloom would be welcome this time of year by me...

We are in the middle of a melt down here in GA. Had about 2 inches of snow then ice on top of that. Does not sound too bad but for the Deep South, it may as well been a foot of ice. I think I will follow Tina’s suit and write a blog about it….

Love your Hyacinth vases Tina. They are awesome…

  22. Looking good at your inside garden. Love those hyacith vases. I need to try that.

  23. I think the hedgehog aloe bloom is fantastic! I had no idea that aloe bloomed. I learn something new from a blogger every day.

  24. I like the aloe bloom, as it is rather interesting.

  25. I don't think I've heard of aloe blooming before, it must like you :)
I wish I would've thought of forcing some hyacinths. I love how they and paperwhites smell.

  26. I'll bet your house will smell heavenly soon! I wish I had forced some bulbs to enjoy. There is nothing blooming around here. Carla

  27. It is funny how I love the way fresh flowers smell yet my husband gags at the smell. Does that stop me? I still grow a few bulbs for indoor blooms. I am like you and I want a little bit of spring in the house during winter.
I have never seen that type of Aloe, it is very unique!

  28. Fer, don't know how I missed you but ever SO sorry. You have such pretty flowers in your garden in Japan! Love the idea of banana peel fertilizer.

Skeeter, Looking forward to your post. Yup, that bloom is pretty cool. I'll share with you if you like the next time you come by so you can have some blooms too. Snow is melting here too but still coooold.

GOSS, Look around for the vases. I tell you they were most hard to find but I lucked out at Rural King. I just love them.

lifeshighway, Isn't it great to learn from other bloggers? I enjoyed your last few postings. Ashamed to say I think the hoarding yard is most neat and it would my dream to poke around it. Didn't comment because I never know what to say about the yards.

Keewee, It was a shock really. Lovely color though.

Catherine, I wish I could take credit for the bloom but I suspect the grower who brought it to the show really pumped it up so that it lasted with all those vitamins this long and bloomed. I hope not but think that is what happened. We'll see next January! I love it that Sweet Pea blogs. What a cool way to get her writing and reading and even learning!

Carla, Oh yes the scent is wonderful. It is great to have the forced blooms a month or two earlier than when they are outside. Stay safe in that snow-in other words don't drive! I used to live in Fayetteville and it was mighty ugly if they ever got any snow so I completely understand.

Rosey, Smell is a funny thing indeed! They all just don't get it but we sure do and since we grow it well, you know how it is...

  29. I really like the fragrance of paperwhites too, and DH hates them... I think there's genetic differences in senses of smell, as well as personal taste.

  30. I first saw these a couple of years ago at a trade show and soon nudged the greenhouse manager at work to order some. They are in full bloom right now at work and look like a bunch of fancy candles. I may have to break down and buy one.

  31. SweetBay, Maybe it is a female/male thing. Seems like the majority of us women like the smell but the hubbies don't. Go figure. Love that garden this morning!

Les, It is a delightful plant in my home. Never complains, doesn't drop leaves and looks good no matter how little I water it. They seem to be popular at shows. Your patrons are lucky to have such a conscientious plant buyer to bring these lovelies to them! Happy New Year to you.

  32. Love your thrifty hedgehog. Don't hyacinth roots look wonderful exposed to view in forcing vases? I missed out this year, back to it next year. My mahonia has finished flowering, the whole garden is just sitting there patiently waiting for Spring.

  33. I've never heard of hedgehog aloe, but it's blooms are wonderful! I can't believe you actually like the smell of paperwhite, PEUW! LOL Make sure to post a picture of your penny ball when you get it done. It's pretty easy.

  34. Tina, That hedgehog aloe is so cool, I would love a cutting :) I usually force Hyacinths too but this year I have crocus and iris bulbs, alas not flowering yet. Outside of course it is white with 3 feet of snow and more still coming down. I'm off to shovel snow...
