Stone Cairns in a Coastal Maine Frontyard
Driving along a side road in coastal Maine what do I see but a bunch a yard art-of the coolest kind; natural and unique.
For lack of a better word for these stone sculptures I am calling them cairns. I do think there is another word for them though? Can someone help me out?
They were really unique and brought a smile to my face not only for their out front attitudes but for what they say about the folks who lived in the nearby house.
I personally am thinking the folks in the nearby house are creative, artsy and don't care what their neighbors think about their stone cairns....
in the garden....
What do you think?

I love them....very cute
ReplyDeleteThat is very fun and unique. It will bring a smile to any passerby.
ReplyDeleteThose are awesome Tina! I assume just balanced on top of each other or cemented? Looks like just balanced. Way cool and giving me ideas....
ReplyDeleteHaving fun with the kids but all ends tomorrow, sigh.....
I have always liked the stone art. You should have gotten a picture of the stone frog just after you turn onto Middle Bay Road from 123. That one has been there for years.
ReplyDeleteMorning all.
ReplyDeleteWay too cool. I have seen pics of these stacked rocks before. I can't remember just now what the word is but there is a Hawaiian name for them too. Something as being part of the earth or used for direction. Memory not like it should be. lol
Have a great week all.
I think the stacked stones, whatever they are called, are really fun. Knowing my crew (doggies) they would be knocked over in short order.
ReplyDeleteI think you're right. But I wonder if the neighbors hate them or love them. (I love them!)
ReplyDeleteI think they are neat! I wonder if they've used some form of glue or bonding material to keep them standing upright?! I would love to have 'extra' rocks/stones to try something cool like that;-)
ReplyDeleteThey're perfect. Artistic and made from the stone of the area. Makes me want to create one out of limestone pieces.
ReplyDeleteI think I love them! Very cool Tina.
ReplyDeleteTina,
ReplyDeleteI really like them as well. We see one or two of these types around town, very few and far between.
Tina those are lovely, and your compositions great. I found one blog which do rock art like that, even more amazing because he can balance some stones which looks unusually unbalanced at all, and they don't fall. His art defy gravity somehow!
ReplyDeleteVery cool, Tina! I've seen these on rocky beaches, but never in someone's yard. I wish I could remember the name for these creations, too...
ReplyDeleteI think stone cairn is just the right word, and I love them! I left one behind on a little used hiking trail in Sedona, wonder how long it stayed put.
ReplyDeleteLeave it to a Mainer.....
