This tree was put in this position about 4 or 5 years ago. We cannot remember when that storm passed through. The leaning effect has not done one thing to stop the tree from continuing to grow each year. Her roots must run deep!
There is a puddle of water under the base of the tree where the roots lifted the earth. Frogs love to call this spot home in the summer months. Water will be in this hole long after the creek has run dry. The creek is not a running creek but a Rain Water Run-Off creek so during drought times, it stays pretty dry. Even this hole will dry out in time if no rain falls for a while. Since we are already working on year 4 with this drought, (we are 4 inches behind for 2009) I can only assume it is a matter of time before this tree comes crashing down.
Until then, we will continue to enjoy our LEANING TOWER OF GEORGIA, In the Garden...
Update: Since the writing of this post, we are no longer in a drought! We have had plenty of rain here in GA this past winter and spring so the yard has gone from bone dry to a soggy mess. Another bad storm last night but we survived this one with no damage.
We are off for yet another Spring adventure this weekend so I may not be on here much... Everyone have a great Weekend!
Everyone have a Wonderful Weekend full of family and colored eggs!
ReplyDeleteHave a wonderful Easter weekend with your family!
ReplyDeleteCameron
congrats on being out of the drought! Happy Easter to one and all. We have a lot of trees like that one in the area. Most are like that from Isabel (2003) and I guess they will be until they decay from the underside.
ReplyDeleteHappy Easter!
ReplyDeleteWe have a leaning tree of Michigan, planted (not surprisingly) at a gas station. Next time I drive by, I'll get a photo! Happy Easter!
ReplyDeleteSkeeter, I am thrilled for Georgia and the end of the drought! Has the Lake outside of Atlanta gotten back to its regular height?
ReplyDeleteI love the froggy hole and the leaning tree! I would love to have a spot where frogs hung out!
Have a good weekend, gail
I'm glad you got some much needed rain this week Skeeter. Looks like your leaning tree has provided a nice place for the frogs to take a dip. I'm sure nature will take care of this tree in it's own time if it falls it will provide another place for wildlife to take refuge. Have a nice weekend & Happy Easter!
ReplyDeleteYeah for no more drought! I can see that pontoon getting lots of use this summer. Yahoo for boats and lakes! I like the frog hole too. Looks comfy-especially during droughts. I have been to Pisa and it IS so worth visiting! But any city in Italy is worth visiting as I enjoy the country too much. Pisa is not far from Camp Darby. Remember Camp Darby? We would vacation there and loved it so much. I miss Europe so much. One of these days Mr. Fix-it and I need to take a vacation there. Nope, wouldn't be the same I think. Have a great time on vacation yourself!
ReplyDeleteMorning all!
Cool post! Looks like frog heaven underneath that tree!
ReplyDeleteI hope everone has a great Easter with lotsa family and fun and thankfullness (is that a word?).
ReplyDeleteSkeeter be safe and have tons of fun!!!
I think it's wonderful that you've left it as long as you can so that the wildlife can enjoy it. We leave dead and sometimes dying trees in our acreage to help our friends, the birds, frogs and insects along.~~Dee
ReplyDeleteHappy Easter! A nice place for the frogs. I thought they had declared the drought over.
ReplyDeletePretty amazing what nature will do. I bet the frogs are glad you left the tree where it was!
ReplyDeleteCongratulations on the rain you needed so badly. It's nice that you've got an area where you can let the tree do its natural thing. Many of our local wild areas have sycamores that decided to topple over decades ago, but they still continue to grow--and thrive.
ReplyDeleteHow cool, From now on, Wildlife will be attracted to your yard...That is a wonderful thing.
ReplyDeleteWe are safely at our destination! Beautiful drive in the Blue Ridge Mountains. What a thrill to see daffys in bloom! Our daffys are long gone but still going strong here in VA. The redbuds along the drive were fantastic and i thought TN had a lot. Nothing compared to this VA route...
ReplyDeleteNow it is bed time...
I have a few leaning trees of my own over here probably not least because the part of Australia where I live is currently in the 14th year of drought
ReplyDeletedoes make for a gardening challenge for sure
What an interesting tree, Skeeter. You are fortunate that you can leave it to Nature rather than cut it down because of nearby neighbors. I was going to send some of our rain your way if I could, but I see you don't need it anymore:)
ReplyDeleteI did visit the Leaning Tower of Pisa several years ago. I would say you didn't miss much...it's pretty much a tourist trap. I much preferred visiting the quiet village of Assisi, which I think is nearby.
Catsmum, I do think the drought was the culprit to our leaning tree as well. But still hanging on for now...
ReplyDeleteRose, I had heard the Leaning Tower was a bit of a tourist trap so that is why we never made it there while we lived in Europe. But I do wish I had seen it but not going to put that one on my "Bucket List" lol...
I guess we all of some sort of "leaner" in our yards...LOL!
ReplyDeleteHow cool to have your own Monument in your yard! Hope you had fun during Easter.
ReplyDeleteDirt Princess, that is for sure. And we actually have several leaning trees in our woods...
ReplyDeleteChandramouli, Yep, we do have a momument of sorts in the leaning tree. lol... We did have a nice Easter in Virginia with the Saints family. Hope you had a nice Easter holiday as well...
