Evolution of a Magnolia

BY SKEETER
May 9 Day 1

The little Gem Magnolia tree we purchased last year is doing well in my Georgia Gardens. Planted during a drought which continues to plague our soil. We received some rain the past few days but we are so far behind that I fear it will take a Tropical Storm to get us back to normal pool at the lake.

  1. Last year I got up close and personal with my first magnolia bloom at a local library. I fell in love. If one ever comes my way at a good deal I hope to add these magnificent blooms to my garden.

That was a lovely series of photos.

    1. I have always wanted one but the Saint was not too keen on them. He kept saying how nasty they look with those fallen leather-like leaves on the ground. When we found this one for $15 at the big Garden Sale, I told him that it was our tree and that was that... hee hee... Wish you were close by as we could pick you one up and deliver it for you! The next sale is in June and I am sure they will have them again....

Their scent is really nice but they do not last for long, sigh...

  2. It's beautiful! I always admire these lovelies and try to smell them when I am close. There is nothing more southern than a wonderful magnolia! I like the series of photos!

    1. They do make a Southern Statement. I only wish the blooms would last longer then they do. Pretty much, only one day then brown. I forgot to snap a picture of the entire tree, LOL. Oh well, another post to come showing all the trees purchased that day and if they survived the drought their first year....

Too busy to write more words. Laundry, house cleaning and packing. Whoop whoop.... See ya tomorrow girl.....

  3. Beautiful pics. Love that Magnolia. Wish I had room here for one. They do make a mess with those leaves but that would be a beauty to rake compared to this oak that I have. Leaves so small you can't rake them.

    1. Lola, which oak do you have? Our willow oaks are a pain in the butt to rake. They have those finger like leaves that a mower will only blow around! Drive me crazy...

    1. Good luck on your new magnolia! I know this one has done well considering the drought. I just hope she hangs on this summer then I will feel better about her being....

  9. I love the magnolias! I am surprise that yours are just blooming the 1st week in May as ours were in full bloom just before that. Also ours still have a few flowers hanging tough. Maybe it is too hot down there for them to have a long bloom time. I find that quite strange since they are susposed to be a southern flower.

    1. Is your tree a Little Gem or Southern Magnolia??? This one is a little Gem and they are a bit different then the others plus this one is not established as of yet either. Has not even been in the ground a year yet. So all that may factor into the cause....

  11. Skeeter, my oak is [I'm told] a water oak. It's a dbl trunk & I hate those. It is dying so must come down. $$$$$$$ is the hold up.

  12. shows how fleeting life is - and its basic biological purpose, briefly beautiful, attracted insect, dropped seeds onto petals which will soon drop, all will be recycled and so it goes - great post, Skeeter. Enjoy your break.

  13. This is just amazingly beautiful. Thanks for being patient in pulling this off. I'm been out of commission for five months so it''s great to be back to see such beautiful work.;

  14. Wow, thanks for giving us an up-close look at your gorgeous magnolia bloom. The six-day wait was certainly worth it, but it's a shame the blossom doesn't last longer. Beauty is fleeting!

  15. They are a majestic flower and handsome to boot. Unfortunately, they can't handle winter here in the North Country....
