Plant of the Month June 08

I can't choose a specific Plant of the Month for June. I am going to let you all choose which one you like best in a survey on my sidebar. There are many more who read than comment, and I hope those readers will also vote for the Plant of the Month. The choices are Yarrow or Bee Balm.

Let me say that normally I would truly make a decision with no problem. Even though there are many great blooming plants in June, these two meet all of my criteria for becoming the Plant of the Month in my garden, but they are both SO similar I really can't choose.

Both yarrow and bee balm have the following features in common: drought tolerant, spread rather aggressively, grow in sun (preferred) or part sun, make a great display for a month or more, disease and pest resistant, have multiple colors and growth habits, and generally are all around good plants. The worst that can be said is they may spread too aggressively, but I have not had a problem with this in my garden, so I am comfortable choosing either one of these two outstanding perennials.

So, to everyone out there reading this post, which one will win the title Plant of the Month? If it is a tie, I will award the title to both plants with no problem.

  1. My vote is for the bee balm since I just got some from my wife's Aunt. They are both cool plants. I have 4 different kinds of yarrow and wouldn't mind others!

  2. The lavender monarda is beautiful. I've never seen that color.

The golden yarrow is a great plant. The flowers last such a long time. I usually bring a bunch inside to use for dried arrangements.

  3. Yarrow is a wild roadside plant up here, so my vote is for bee balm. They both are really pretty but I like the height of bb.

  4. Since I only have Yarrow in my garden, I will have to vote for it... I planted Bee Balm a few years ago and it never bloomed so I took it out of the planters. Now I wonder if I was too quick to take it out as the blooms are beautiful in your pictures! I had it in small planters not knowing it would get that tall so maybe I will give it another shot next year. With this drought, nothing more will be planted this year though...

Hope all has a great day. No clouds so far today for the first time in 2 weeks. Sure wish all the clouds would ave produced some real rain for us.

  6. Wow, we are running pretty heavily on the yarrow. It will be interesting to see on Friday the outcome and I am SO enjoying hearing all of the opinions on these two plants.

  7. Finally my beebalm has bloomed...the first time since I planted it years ago...so I voted for it! Yarrow is golden and dependable but beebalm is apparently elusive and must be cherished, its ego appeased!

  10. Gail-Great reason and thanks for voting.

DP-Bee balm definitely attracts the bees. It is a cool name.

Randy and Jamie, Welcome to in the garden. I enjoyed your blog as well. Well written and entertaining. BJ actually has a ball in his mouth. Even without it though he does look as though he is laughing. Such a great pal.

Not too late to vote. Two more days. I will be awarding the title based on votes, not comments. So as much as I enjoy learning from you all, the votes count this time. They are all anonymous. Please don't forget to check it on the top right of my sidebar. Thanks!

  11. Cool flowers Tina --another funfilled kiddo day here. It sure was hot at the ball field tonight --we had the early game and came home to swim when we were done so we could cool off. The not cute anymore bunnies ate more beans while I was at ball with the kiddos. I had Boy 1 lift the planter with me onto the deck:0) We might be able to salvage a few plants. Have a greta night! Ciao!

  12. Anonymous, One of the gardeners on the tour (Charlsie) talked of deer spray. I am not sure but this may work for the bunnies too. Look for it at Home Depot or Lowes. I think deer prufe? Something like this. I think it is kind of hot too. Low humidity, or so the weatherman says. I turned my a/c off five days ago and am ever so happy. I might need to go for a swim too though. ttyl

Skeeter musta had a busy day as she has not been on since this morning. Hope she had fun.

  15. It's hard to decide as both are beautiful but I think I'll go for the Bee Balm. It lets you know it's there to enjoy it's beauty.

Hope all have a restful night & a lovely day tomorrow.

  17. Hey Jean, I was here just reading not talking. Ha, I was on the puter most of the day sorting pictures and getting Postings ready for future dates. At the end of the day, my eyeballs were a blur from all the pictures! LOL...

  18. Skeeter, I have a secret tip with the picture. Now whenever I take some I immediately upload them to a post. Once you sort through your old ones it will be easier. Leaving it for later is much more work.
