Blueberries

Yum, yum! Blueberries are ripening very quickly! I actually beat the robins to this one ripe blueberry and enjoyed a heavenly taste. I looks like I would have enough for the birds and my family, but alas, it has not been the case in the past few years. The birds always beat me to the punch and I wind up with nothing. But this year we are having a banner crop-lots of ripe berries for me too. I now have a big reason to hurry to the garden-so I can enjoy some fresh picked berries as I walk along.

But because I don't have enough berries to freeze too, our family usually travels to the Tin Barn out in Guthrie each year to pick berries. The very nice lady at the Tin Barn grows both blueberries and blackberries. She is an extraordinary gardener and also breeds daylillies. If you are interested in any of these three gardening related things, you need to make the trek to the Tin Barn. It is open on Saturdays and by appointment. 1. I hope you have a great day and get to enjoy spending the time with friends there to help and the ones there to just visit! I love blueberries, The first picking always goes in to make a blueberry compote (sp) to go over frshly made pancakes. I think that is a everyone's favorite way to have them here.

  4. Yes, just be Tina & have fun. The day will be great & it will pass before you know it.
I too like muffins. I had my first blueberry yesterday. In fact it was the only berry on the bush. Maybe next yr. they will be better as this is the first yr. for them. "They aren't settled in their new home yet".

  5. We have blackberries directly behind the house, we had to cut them down last year to put the siding on then the radio tower up. I WANT to put post up with the wire lines to train them to produce. There is enough for three rows, 24 ft long. Sooo good. Blueberries on the powerlines (as always) but I'm scared of the bears! Have a good day and we'll talk later, although you going to be tired, tired, tired.

  7. Skeeter I am with you with the pancakes, just pass the butter and syrup and lottsa of both!!
But I make a thing my mother used to make that is called Blueberry Buckle that is to die for. It has 3 layers (cake, blueberries and a crumb mixture. Then it is topped with a lemon sauce and served hot. But my pickey eating husband just likes plain ole blueberry pie.

Maine is full of all berries but has many, many blueberry fields.
Wyman's blueberries are in Maine and I believe the largest blueberry company in the nation.
Tina usually there are enough blueberries in ME for all the people and birds but oh boy. Do you remember Nana's cherry trees. They could be completly loaded and the birds would strip them in less than a day. Nana would keep her eye on the trees and keep the birds away but one year we were out of town when the just right for the birds time came. A neighbor say it and kept throwing rocks at the birds so saved some but also lost a lot.

I have so many blackberries and they just take over. It is a battle to get rid of them. They grow so fast.

  8. Very quiet here but I'm sure Tina had alot of noise and activity today --can't wait to hear about it. Loved the blueberry post --we took the kiddos to the Tin Barn today and picked 5 pounds of blueberries. Wanted to make jelly but opted for mowing the yard --hahaha --really would've preferred the jelly making but the yard was needing it's trim. Hope you all have a great night --ciao!

  9. Yum to all the berries! I need to go picking soon as I missed the strawberries.

Today went fabulously. It was so nice seeing friends and making new ones. We had (at best guess) between 80-100 visitors. All very nice and all left with a plant or two. The highlight had to be seeing some gardeners with whom I have visited their gardens but who had not yet made it here. It was so nice sharing and talking with them and thanking them for the plants they gave me-and I could show them where they were growing! The greatest hit was a surprise (I will disclose later but it was a weed!) I will prepare a post once I have visited the other gardens and got some more pictures. Great, great day for our garden here and I was quite happy, just wished hubby did not have to work as that would have made it better. Anyhow, will let you all go, talk to ya tomorrow.

  10. Oh Tina I am so glad you enjoyed the tour day and can't wait to here a detailed report, which I know will be informative and entertaining. Our blueberries at the top of the hill behind the shed are so dry, it seems there is not enough water in the world, or here anyway, to perk them up. The blueberries are shriveling on the bushes. ;-<

  13. Frances, Skeeter and Lola, The day was truly super-just like blogging! Got to meet many super people and talk with them all. Today I am going on the tour and seeing six other gardens. I will photograph them all and put together a post to share.

Frances, I think even if you don't get any blueberries, they are fun to grow. That hill can be challenging. Maybe get the Financier or Gardoctor to install an irrigation system?

Skeeter, Kicking back now....Well worth it all. The friends and guests were great!

Lola, I was definitely myself as I didn't stop talking-about plants of course. My helpers did a great job as well and told everyone some little tidbits about plants. It was fun!

  14. Tina we all knew it would go great but congrats anyway and what a tease you are!!!

  15. Whoops, I forgot but that was a lotta plants to give away at one time, shows just how busy you have been, I am in awe.

  16. Blueberries! Yum!!!!! It looks delicious!! My birds all ate my boysenberries... so maybe next year, I can find a way to protect them somehow. I hope you get more than just one berry from your blueberry tree.

  17. DP, I saw cloth that goes over Fruit bushes and trees at Lowes by the fencing in the Garden Center. You may want to give it a try in the future...

  18. Yes DP even Ace Hardware has bird netting. I have to put it over my Persimmon Tree to keep the birds from eating the fruit. Seems like they only eat the spots that ripen first so therefore I have a bunch of fruit that has places where the birds have pecked.

  19. That bird netting sounds like a good idea. I toured some of the other gardens today and many had some kind of critter preventers on their food things. Deer, birds and rabbits seem to be the problem. Frustrating.

  20. Anonymous, We posted at almost the same time last night and I missed your comment-but wanted to ask how the blueberry picking was? I plan to go soon as well and hope I get 5pounds. Did it take you all long to pick them all? I have been out all day looking at gardens and dreaming of all the beautiful plants and nice ideas and set ups I saw. All very nice gardeners.
