Making Do

Most gardeners find ways to make do with what they have on hand.
Below are some pictures of this.

This is tucked in the opening of the azalea {caused by death of azalea}

This is the view from the back. There is a mum in the one to the right and a petunia in the front one

This is a close up of another arrangement. Can you see the height that is provided? This is a petunia and an lpomoea batatas "Margarita". {Sweet Potato Vine}
These pots are hanging from "stands" I've had and used for the past 15 years.

Yes, these "stands" {as I call them} are from arrangements for the sad occasion of a funeral.

I just couldn't throw them in the trash. Thinking cap on here. lol

I thought how nice they would help add height in the garden.

The hook that holds the arrangement on the stand makes a perfect hook for a hanging basket.

So I use these {I have several} when I need height.........

  1. Hello Lola : )
I have a hard time throwing out anything I think could be useful in the future .. but I am hard pressed for places to keep things. I think your idea is great and it has worked out wonderfully for you !

  2. Good Morning Everyone.
I hope all have a glorious Memorial Day. Lots of food, fun, family time & more.

GardenJoy4Me, These "stands" fold flat so not too much room is needed. I just hung them on the wall of my shed till I need one.

  3. A gardener's eye is what I call it.
There is a use for almost anything in the gardens.

  4. Lola, Good morning! This is exactly why I need a basement! I want to keep things ...just in case! This is a clever repurposing and it works wonderfully in your garden! Have a great day! gail

  5. Hi Darla, yes, we gardeners have an eye for things to work that is unusual.

  6. Hi Gail, GM to you too. I had a shed built just for the purpose of putting my garden "stuff" in--like plants in the winter, tools & or anything I think may work in my garden at any given time. I do like to recycle.

  7. Hi Lola, I love making do. I like your teepees (let's call them that!)--good reuse and I do like the height they provide. I love coming up with solutions with things on hand, rather than running to the store each time!

  8. Great ideas! Creative ways to add some interest to your gardens.

  9. Very clever, Lola; I would never have guessed their original purpose! I think we gardeners are the original recyclers:) Hope you are having a wonderful weekend!

  10. Excellent idea. They could also be used to hold a home made pot of Memorial Flowers at a cemetary. I need to find me some of those!

  11. Oh I love it Lola. I would love to get my hands on some of them.

I also hope you and everyone else has a safe and happy holiday weekend.

  12. Good Morning Lola and great ideas! I hope you have a lovely day and some good food on this beautiful Memorial Day! Reminds me of some of the things my mom used when we were kiddos. She salvaged the bottom of a wood burning stove and put it up on cinderblocks to make a BBQ grill --and we used it every year starting with Memorial Day picnics:) She sanded it and made it look really cool -defintely one of a kind:) Ciao!

  14. Good morning all! What a good idea to reuse these stands for your pots Lola. They look great and the height makes for lots of interest. Everyone have a great day.

  15. I love they stands! I would have never guess they were recycled from a funeral. They look lovely rusted. Kind of reminds me of a cauldron over a fire.

  16. That's a terrific reuse, and it seems appropriate for Memorial Day.

I sometimes use potted plants to fill in temporarily where another has died or had to be removed or where a new plant is just plain slow in getting started. Your idea of using a stand to elevate smaller pots is a great one to help fill in what might be a space where the smaller plant might look lost.

  17. Monica the Garden Faerie, Thank you, TP's it is. Sometimes it's inconvenient to run to the store. Hence, make do.

  18. Cameron, gardeners do have great ideas. That is part of the gardening process.

  19. Thank you Rose. That is part of recycling is to camouflage the real use of an item. I'm thinking of other things I can use them for. That's later.
I'm having a great weekend. Hope you are too.

  20. Hi Cinj, That is one thing they could be used for. I don't know about where you live but in some small places they are discarded into a pile off to the side so if you were a mind to you could check it out.

  21. Hi Jean, as I mentioned to Cinj sometimes you can find them discarded off to the side at smaller places. Also the brackets that fit on the top of a stone can be used to put flowers on your mail box. I think it can be made to fit. I plan to try that.

  22. Hi Anonymous, I hope you & family are having a lovely time today.
That was a super idea that you Mom had. That's where inventions come from that other pay for. Great going.

  23. Hi Dawn, Thanks. I hope you & family are having a great time on this glorious day. Isn't it great to have family around at times like these.

  24. Hello Tina, First I wish to Thank You & Your Family for what you have sacrificed to give us the freedom that we so enjoy. It's the giving of people like you that has made this country as it is today---FREE.

The stands do provide some height where it is needed. Sometimes we don't always have something to sit a pot on to get that height. Some of the pics didn't upload. My mistake.
I have these all over the yard. I like the fact they can be moved to accommodate height in a garden.

  25. Great idea! I think they look really nice. I like being able to add height to a garden bed, especially instant height like these stands add.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Hi Wormandflowers, Thanks, they do remind me also of that. An idea for a later date.
I like the rusted effect & that will happen over time. I have different sizes so they really are versatile.

  27. Hi James, It's sad, but these stands signify to me the lose of a loved one. But memories are a good thing.
In the one pic that is what the purpose is, is to help fill in where the azalea had died. They will accommodate a 10" hanging pot. Of course the smaller one will hold an 8" pot.
I do hope you are having a very nice day.
    Thanks for stopping by.

  29. Thanks Catherine.
That's my sentiment. I love to add height to my gardens. Even more so now after all the rain we've had. Most all that I planted in the ground is history. It's getting too late to start over as the heat of summer is upon us.

  30. Hi Kathrin,
I hope your day has been lovely. I can see how the help would work. It is nice to have help no matter what kind. The more fun the better.
I see we posted at the same time. That's cool.

  31. What a clever way to repurpose those for your garden Lola. Happy Memorial Day!

  32. Lola, love the post. I have often wondered what to do with all those Spray Stands after they are removed from the cemetery I manage. I will have new use for them now instead of just piling them up and sending them to the local florist. Just love it, can't wait to start using them for different things in the garden.

  33. Lola, what a wonderful way to recycle a still useful item! Plus gives you a reminder of a loved one. How perfect on this Memorial Day! I wish I were back home so I could go to the cemetery and visit with my grandparents today but distance keeps me away. Sigh, I only wish I had a floral frame from their funerals as a reminder of them. I will keep this idea in mind for future use as I love it...

  34. perennialgardener, Thanks & I hope you had a lovely Memorial Day also.

  35. Jimmy and Wade, Thank you for the comment. I am always looking for ways to use unusual things. As I have said I've had these for 15 years so you can see they last a long time. And they can be used in many ways as I have one that is supporting a gladiola.

  36. Hi Skeeter,
Thank you. It seems to help with the lose to have something that lasts like these stands. But nothing can take the memories away.
I too wish I could visit with many of my relatives, including my baby, that have crossed over. But as you said it is too far away.

  37. Hi Lola, reusing things is the very best way to recycle and keep more stuff from accumulating. It is the rare piece of metal that cannot find a new use, as you have shown so well here.
    Frances

  38. Hi Frances, Thank you so much for the comment. I do like to recycle things. I think our landfills are too full of reusable things that people won't use. They always want something new. New is not always the best.
The legs on these "stands" in most cases does not show. All you see is a pot of flowers or whatever at a desirable height. I love them. I really need some more.
