Yellow Surprise

By SKEETER On Tuesday, I told you how I was out of my Georgia Gardens for 2 weeks. I showed you one of several surprises I found once returning. Another nice surprise was seeing the Purple Homestead Verbena in full bloom. I was afraid I had lost this plant as it looked really poorly when I cleaned out the bed this spring. We had a harsh winter and hot dry summer last year and I was not around to give him attention. But to my surprise, he is giving me a show! Hum, I wonder why I refer to Verbena as a male plant? Another surprise is with this iris. Last year while on a Tennessee visit, I dropped by Tina's Tiger Gardens. This was the visit where I was lucky to meet up with Jean, Anonymous, Nina and Tina. Click Here to see that fun day. Tina was a gracious host serving us lunch. She also sent us home with a bit of her garden. She gave me some Purple and Yellow iris.Imagine my excitement to have my home-state flower in my Georgia gardens! A happy day for me with the iris blooming. The stems on these iris are so tall. Now look at this beautiful yellow iris. No misprint, I did say Yellow Iris. How funny the Yellow Iris Tina gave me is not yellow after all. She is a beauty and I am so enjoying her long stems of beautiful blooms. I don't know the name of this beautiful Iris but do thank Tina for her as I am really in awe of this color. Now Tina, you OWE me a Yellow Iris girl. Just joking and what is that saying, "Beggars can't be choosy" Ha ha. I will forever call this Iris my YELLOW SURPRISE, In the Garden... *****************************

Here are a couple of bonus pictures:We spotted this Green Heron at the lake this past weekend.First Green Heron we have ever seen so a fun surprise...

  2. Skeeter,
Yes they changed the color yellow this year. I think once we had a green heron here a long time ago. They are fairly common in the right habitat, but easily missed too.

  7. You're too funny girl! I will this time for sure dig a yellow iris when they are in bloom. Do you want a bright yellow or pale yellow? Or does it matter? The pale ones are getting ready to bloom now. The 'yellow' red one is called 'Christabel'. Randy of Creating Our Eden helped to identify it and I sent him some a while ago. It is a historical iris that has won some awards in the 1930s. I got it as a passalong from the Tin Barn in Guthrie and tend to pass it to others because it is a prolific spreader-but nice. I've given away so much that my garden will not have as big of a show of it this year but that's okay. As much as I like irises I don't like dividing them and they don't bloom long enough for me so fewer might be better. We shall see. Your 'Homestead' looks great! You can't keep it down once it gets going. Mine is just beginning to bloom. Another very prolific spreader but such a pretty purple. Everyone have a great day!

  8. Good Morning everyone! Going to be another beautiful day in GA and I need to take advantage of it as we are expecting rain tomorrow...

Flowerlady, I so enjoy surprises in the garden! The birdie was a treat and so tame to let us get so close to snap some pictures…

Randy, We have seen the Great Blue and also Little Blue but never the Green before. Such a pretty bird with the sun making its feathers glow! This one allowed us to get really close and it stayed in the cove with us as we fish…

Lola, Greetings! The iris and bird colors are spectacular…

Donna, soon you will see those beauties in full bloom! These “yellow” iris are the last for us this year. I hope they grow stronger and multiply for next year...

Karin, Yes, pass alongs are the best! I have quit a bit of Tina in my gardens as she is so wonderful to share when you visit her gardens…

Darla, I was expecting the Yellow but this color is more interesting to me! So I am happy with this shade of “yellow” The scent is typical iris and brings back such memories of my grandmothers gardens…

  9. Tina, I am joking girl. You keep your iris where they are located. Let your pretties do their thing for a while and I will get yellow iris some day. I love the color of Christabel and one stem had 7 blooms girl! The stems are so long too and I just love them! I hope they do multiply as I want to move them all over the place. I am working on more spring color in my gardens and these really do add a ton of color for me… Again, THANKS for all the beautiful plants you have given me over the years. I see you all over my gardens:-)

  10. Don't you just love it when plants surprise you? Yellow or not, that iris is making me homesick for my Midwest gardens. If we ever settle down here, I'd love to have a few of those beauties.

  11. W2W, Tina says they produce well so I will be kind and pass some along to you on settle down day. Just remind me :-)

  12. Morning All.
Skeeter that "yellow" iris is gorgeous. I have a rust colored 1 that blooms like that. So many blooms on 1 stalk. I know they don't last a long time but I do like them. They remind me of home.
I do like to find surprises in the garden. That's the fun part. My verbena hasn't come back a yet. Things are a bit late coming out due to unusal coolness, I guess.

  13. Those irises are just stunning and the "yellow" one does have a bit of very pretty yellow on it.

Heron's of all kind are a very interesting, gentle and patience bird. Always good to see them. They had declined for a while but are coming back good now, at least in our area I see more than I used to.

  17. Whew, I have been busy today. Expecting house guest for the next 5 days so I have been getting things in order. Running errands and cooking mostly. Tomorrow will be a day of lawn mowing, trimming and house cleaning. The guest should arrive some time tomorrow afternoon....

    Everyone have a great weekend!

  18. Whatever colors of iris are all beautiful. Yours are lovelier because they are given with love! haha. I am also amused at your message exchanges with Tina, have fun folks, and take care.

  19. Your irises are beautiful, Skeeter; in fact, I think I like them better than yellow ones. A friend gave me some yellow iris last year, and I'm wondering if I might have a surprise later this spring, too:) How nice to have the Homestead Verbena come back; I love this plant, but unfortunately it's an annual here since our winters are much too cold to its liking.

  20. Plants seem to speak to us, Skeeter and I guess that makes us decide their gender, I guess :)
I love that Iris too - goes well with the blue ones.
