Holly

BY SKEETER
I discovered something new here in my Georgia Garden. Do you know this bloom above? See the tiny berry? It is a Holly Tree! I had no idea that Holly Trees have tiny blooms but since they produce berry's, it makes sense after thinking about it a bit.
I added this Holly last year during year 2 of a drought. This was one of my purchases from McCorkles Nursery's. I have not seen any stress with this tree since we planted it.
It is not the prettiest of trees at this stage as it has a bare spot in the middle. At $10.00 for this beauty, I am not complaining.
New growth tells me the bare spot may be gone soon on this HOLLY, In the Garden...

  1. I thought maybe you were shaping a topiary.

    1. Hum, Darla, that is an idea as this would be a perfect tree for a topiary! But not the best spot to be formal where I planted it. It survived being planted during a drought so I dont dare move it....

  2. How neat to have your own holly. When do the berries turn red?

    1. It was full of berry's last fall. I was so busy during that time of year that I have no idea what birds enjoyed them. I am however surprised as to how soon I am seeing berry's. Spring berry's. But I dont know much about Holly Trees and am a learn as you go gardener so I shall learn about this beauty over time....

    1. The tree was full of berrys last fall but not sure which birds nibble them. I am asuming the Mockingbird since I saw him the back of the house when I normally rarely see him anywhere but the East or North of the house. I am seeing new growth on the green giants as well so they survived a hot summer drought planting as well. We ended up loosing 2 leylands though. Sigh.... Thank goodness we did not pay full price for them....

  6. I would not complain for $10.00 either and I think it looks very happy and heathly and will turn into a great tree.

  7. Great tree! Hollies are such noble plants. I cut down a wilderness of overgrown azaleas this spring and unearthed a holly, bird planted, flower laden. I knew it was there but I did not know it had grown more than 5 feet tall. I limbed it up as a tree which is the direction it was taking.

  8. One fall my holly was eaten to the trunk and down to the ground! Ouch!
