The Thing About 'Sun Disc' Daffodils

DSCN1740

You would hardly believe the two flowers above are of the same cultivar of daffodils but they are! I ordered 250 'Sun Disc' daffodils from John Scheepers last fall for the purpose that these little jonquilla type daffodils were reputed to be fragrant and would naturalize easily in my garden. It was my vision to have a wave of miniature fragrant yellow flowers in the front yard so I planted most of these daffodils in the lawn near my new pond and concrete patio. I must say their performance has been disappointing. The flowers are so small they don't even look like a daffodil bloom and the blooms are not fragrant. But! There is a uniqueness about these flowers-can you see it? The graduation in colors as the flowers get older is fascinating. You can have several shades of yellow to white flowers and so I thought I'd share this little trait with you all today. I'll give my 'Sun Discs' a bit longer in the garden due to this interesting trait....

  1. They sure are small for daffy's. Hum, wonder if they shall become larger over time in the garden...???... Only time will tell... Honeysuckle and Jasimine are smelling devine in my gardens right now. Love that sweet scent....

  2. I've always had good luck with Scheepers. If you're disappointed, have you contacted them? I do like the graduated color...I get that on my leucanthemum 'Broadway Lights'

  3. I found that later blooming daffodils are a bit smaller. Not that April daffodils are late, but this year they seem to be.

  4. I've never seen daffodils like these before; they're certainly interesting. Maybe as Skeeter says, they'll do better over time.

  5. I have Salome, a daffodil that starts off with a yellow 'cup' and it fades to coral to pink to almost white. I have a lot of small daffs -- though mine are fragrant. Interesting. Hope yours improves over age.

  6. They are small for a daffy but they also are very pretty. I get that catalog and have gone to the web site but have never ordered anything from them. I hate the size of the catalog, just does not firt the pile as good as most of the other ones. Also it is way out in WI and since we have so many seed companies in Maine I like to support them. Maybe as they get older the scent will come out. Getting ready to go outside as Terri-Lynn is off today with it being a holiday in ME and MA she is home to help me. Been so nice I have been ouside every day anyway actually.

  7. Love those little cups. Maybe in time they will get larger. My jasmine is in full bloom, the heavenly smell is all over the neighborhood. Love it.

  11. The shade change is interesting. They're cute. Sorry they didn't perform as you wished. Maybe another year to get more established.
