Tad Took Over When I Wasn't Looking!

Having some big dogs in the house means some concessions. One concession I make for BJ, my golden retriever, is to provide him his own swimming pool. It is a cheap little plastic pool. BJ is a water dog but even if he wasn't, he gets very hot in the garden. I have found out the hard way he must have water to take a dip in daily. If he doesn't have his own water, he jumps in my bathtub pond. Trust me, those last two remaining fish don't need a 115 pound dog joining them in the bathtub.

Lately I have been buying a few plants for planting. Who hasn't? It is spring after all. To hold the plants over and for easy watering, I store the plants in a wagon in the shade right next to BJ's pool. When they need watering or cooling off, I place the plants in the pool. Some have spent a bit of time there. I must have been using BJ's pool a little too much because now I have tadpoles in the pool! Normally I empty and refill his pool every other day or so. Can you see the tadpoles in the picture above? I wasn't sure if they would show up. They are very visible when disturbed because they wiggle all over the place.

Poor BJ. Or is it poor tadpoles? I know BJ will get in this pool regardless of whether or not the tadpoles mind. Though, because his pool is kind of green now, he may just prefer my bathtub pond. Lookout goldfish....here he comes!

  1. Too funny, my want-a-be pond has tads, poor things, water is evaporating quickly. Prepare yourself fo a population explosion this summer. Dog don't like the tad then!

  2. I don't have a pond, but we do have a wet weather stream that runs through our property...one of my favorite things to do is to sit on the deck at night and listen to the frogs and bugs.

  3. Good morning. I was up early then laid back down. Don't know why with all this work I have to do.

Dawn, The water in this 'pond' is evaporating too, but I keep adding more. Poor BJ, he has to stay inside while his pool is a nursery. Hope yours doesn't dry up. I am still hopeful the rain will come-to all of us.

Jillybean, Welcome back! With all those woods and area you have I would expect you would have tons of frogs and toads. I love listening to them as well. Fireflies are out big time now too.

  4. When BJ starts hopping and croaking, we will know he has had his fill of tadpoles... tee hee...

I had many new plants that did not make it into the ground for a long period of time and needed watering each day. This would have been an asset had I thought of it. When I saw you using the pool as a watering station, I thought it was a great idea!

  5. Our pool lost its water this winter and found a hole along the way. So now we have lots of tadpoles all over in the 2 inches of water left.I let Christopher get some out to save them from me filling the pool and adding chemicals. If anyone wants to raise some tadpoles come and get em.lol..

  6. Now that is funny....something gets your fish in the tub, which is higher than the doggie pool and the tadpoles, stay. Where is Orkin? Staying out front?

Another hot day with no rain in sight. I have 3 wireless thermometers in the house and they are all over 100. The one by my computer says 101. It did cool off good last night for a change, went down in the 60's. Darn, I HATE the heat. We did have a really big breeze yesterday but that will just dry things out more. Guess I'll have to go to C&G Design blog and read about Christmas again, and dream!!

    Welcome back from Dollywood Jillybean.

I sure do miss Nina, Lola and Frances. Tina, have you heard how Nina's sister is doing?

  7. I remember my friends two goldens (sisters) laying in their wading pool. Those dogs were a stitch. They would steal toys from the neighbor kids and deposit them in the pool;) Moms always knew where to look when little Timmy's baseball was missing.

  8. I can see the tadpoles! I think I feel bad for the little water critters more than poor BJ. The water is his and he doesn't want to share. :-)

  9. Thanks Skeeter, I watching BJ closely as I expect him to get totally disgusted with his pool and jump in my pond. Poor fish.

Sarah, So sorry about your pool puncture. I know about pool problems. One week until the tour and no pool set and no spa set up. What a mess. The good thing is your son see them and save them. Is there a pond close by you can dump them in? I might do this with mine. Haven't decided yet.

Mom, I am always so happy to hear from you on here. Orkin does nothing but lay around. She kills birds for fun and recently killed a cedar waxwing. The poor thing was still warm when I found it right out front in my face where she left it. I don't think she messes with the fish but she is a pain. I do love her though. The last two fish are still there. I am thinking it was a bird and since the trees have leafed out, they can't see the pond anymore. Some hawks do swoop in low though. I am so sorry it is so hot up there. 100 degrees is VERY hot for Maine. Yes indeed. Especially with no rain. I did talk with Nina a few days ago. Her sister is still having tests but the diagnosis was confirmed. She is holding her own. Nina is still having problems with her login. She is coming over for the tour on Saturday as she purchased some tickets. Her daughter will be with her too and maybe Sarah. I emailed Lola recently, she has not responded and has not been on so I am not sure what is going on with her. The plants she sent me came up and I wanted to tell her.

Roses and Lilacs, Goldens are the best. Collies come in a close second:) Yours is beautiful and such a nice story about Ivan. We have several pet lovers on here so you are in good company.

DP, BJ gets the cushy air conditioned life. The poor tads may not make it unless they hurry and mature. The water keeps going down but I do refill it. I guess they will be our science project. Not sure if I will keep them there during the tour next week though.

  10. Tina, you have NEVER heard of Tim Russet? Really and truley? He is everywhere. He had his own nightly (Mon-Fri) show on MNSBC and was the one that did Meet the Press every Sunday for 20 years. He wrote a book about his father called Big Russ a couple of years ago, among many other bookks. I think he was the one that wrote The Greatest Generation. It was about the WWII heros.

  11. Hi Tina--the tadpoles are cute! But, I do feel for BJ since it's been so hot. I am so happy we had a huge downpour about an hour ago --my yard was dancing with delight and so was I :0) Trying to water things that look thirsty was a tiresome job, lol. The garden hose can only reach so far, lol. We have company today so I've been busy --the kiddos did swim earlier --only when we have guests since the sun will fry them. Hubby and Boy 1 and Boy 2 want to go fishing tonight --they probably will but hubby doesn't want to take Sidekick and Girl model --wants to do some "man fishing" which would generally mean fish all night and not hurry home to wash and put two small people to bed, hahaha. I can find plenty of things for the smaller two to do around the yard and house. Hope all is well --Jean I hope you get some relief from the heat --hi everyone --have a great night!

  12. Mom, Yes, of course I have heard of Tim Russet. I got him confused with Paul Newman for some reason. Probably because Newman is sick with a bad disease so I thought it was him that died. Russert was rather young and his death unexpected. It is all over the news. Sorry you will not have him to watch, but at least the other guy is back. What was his name?

Anonymous, We got sprinkles here. Not enough to even wet the grass under the trees. I was looking, trust me. I know you are happy and your lawn too. Hubby and boys should get a good night out. The two younger ones will be fine. Especially if hubby brings home some good fish. Sounds like fun but it may (I hope!) rain more.

  13. Mom, Cedar Rapids is where Dee used to live. We visited her a few years ago when she graduated from radiological school. I can't believe it is all underwater. We went to the Children's Museum downtown. Now it is all shutdown.

  14. Why don't you move the tadpoles to the bathtub pond? I made a special garden for tadpoles my boy brought home and then the silly things ate each other.

  15. aunt debbi/kurts mom, Hi there! Hubby suggested I move them to the bathtub pond, but I think they will die since there is a pump on there for the fish. I wonder if it will work? I might try a few.

  16. Ya I read it wrong. I thought you said you had not heard of him but you were saying you had not heard that he died. If you mean Imus by the other guy we only get him on radio but I do listen to him He used to have Russet on a lot. At least every couple of weeks. Russet was Godfather to Imus's son, Wyatt and Wyatt loved Russet and he is only 10 so will be upset. Sad. Wonder who will take his place. Maybe Chris Matthews as he is pretty good and works for same network. Whoever it is they will never measure up to Russet. Also I was wrong about The Greatest Generation, that was Tom B. Don't know how to spell his name but think you know what I mean.

The floods are terrible there. Do you know if Dee is still there? Did you ever hear from her again?

  17. I did not realize how beloved Tim Russert was as I never watched Meet the Press, though I have heard of him. Sad for his family for sure. I have not heard from Dee, no I don't think she still lives there.

  18. Yes, he was very loved and respected. He was so smart and fair and you could tell just from his voice, not to mention the twinkle in his eyes or expressions, that he just loved what he was doing. I loved his laugh and he was always laughing.
I have been watching it since the news broke. MSNBC did not even break for a commerical for 5 hours. Usually that is only done for our world leaders.

  19. Tina, heard anything about hardy fushia? I want one bad, bad, bad, it's new. Looked today, thinking when I find it might be pricey.

  20. Dawn, I picked up 3 "Croftway Yellow Sovereign Cape Fuchsia" and they are doing great thus far! Showing their second batch of blooms as I type...

Is sad about Tim Russet. He was in 50's and wayyyyy too young...

  21. I have suggested to Jay that we go get some tadpoles so Emma can watch them grow and change and then release them. He isn't really that kind of guy I don't think. He couldn't believe I would hold let alone catch a snake. Silly man!!! I'm not a chicks chick! I love tadpoles. They are so cute and watching them get legs and lose their tail is awesome!

  22. Dawn, Fushia do not do well for me down here. I don't bother. Skeeter is having luck though.

Christine, You are not a girly girl, no, pretty tough. Snakes are great. The tadpoles are growing like crazy. I have some good pics of some more creepy crawlies too and will post on them as time goes on. Say hi to Jay and I hope you all have been having a great spring and summer so far! Summer starts Saturday, the garden tour day. What a great day. Much love.
