Tulip Chairs Revisited

DSCN5416

Tulip chairs are a true American classic from years past. Nothing could be more functional or attractive or comfortable to sit on in the garden than these old vintage chairs. In fact, they were so comfortable, and people remember them so fondly that these vintage chairs are now being made again-and have achieved quite a following amongst garden lovers everywhere.

Years ago I had posted about the tulip chairs, aka candy bouncers. I really like these chairs in my garden. So imagine my surprise when at a pit stop in Alabama at Tin Top Antiques in Hartselle Alabama I came across a vintage tulip chair. This is the first and only time I have actually seen why the chairs were called tulips-or at least I think the painted and embossed tulip may have something to do with tulip chairs. Do you see the painted tulip on the above chair? The paint is not original to the chair but if you look closely I think you can see where the metal is stamped in the form of a tulip. That is original to the chair.  I thought it so neat I had to share it with you all....

in the garden....

Do you own a tulip chair

  1. Hi Tina....Great find!! This is something I would have in my garden! I have something similar, but it doesn't have the Tulip stamp.

    1. Christy, same thing! Just a different style. I was shocked to actually find one with a tulip in it but still the same style. Have a great day!

    2. Boy...I knew I was lucky to get these but now I feel REALLY lucky after reading all your comments. A nice lady that had come to the garden tour remembered our garden and came by to say she had two chairs and a matching settee that she wanted to get rid of and asked if we wanted them. They are a little worn and we can't actually sit in them, but they look perfect in our cottage garden!

    1. I think it was like $37. Much too much for me for a chair. You can find them sometimes at yard sales for less than $20. I did not buy this one but loved the tulip!

  3. I know I must be just about recovered from the flu, because when I read your post I had to jump up and go out in 30 degree temps to see if my chairs had the tulip stamps! Nope -- they have vertical, slightly flared stamped lines on the backs and seats -- a little tulip like if you really use your imagination, but not really. I bought the chair and double seated glider at an auction in Hernando, Mississippi about 25 years ago for around $15 each. Love love love them.

  4. Wow, what a find and I can only assume a decent price or you would have passed on it. You may be on to why they are called tulip chairs with this one! I have the remake chairs as you know but we had the real ones on our front porch growing up along with the glider. I still see these chairs on front porches as we drive along country roads and they bring back such memories of a more simpler time....

    1. I did not buy it Skeeter but was taken with the tulip I had to snap a picture-as we were leaving heading home no less much to Mr. Fix-it's chagrin.

  5. I love that type of chair! Even though I've never heard them called tulip chair before. I don't have any, but I'll have to start taking a closer look at the ones I come across. My grandmother had some of these - and you are right - they are super comfortable! I remember sitting in them for a long time when I was a child. Anything that can make a child sit still for a while has to be comfortable! :)
