Don't you just love spring?
My favorite flower of all time is the peony and it just happens to be a spring bloomer. The many petals, history of growing in my grandmother's garden, and longevity draw me to these flowers. Not to mention the scent most have-though not this particular tree peony-cultivar unknown.

What is your favorite spring flower and can you tell us why?

  1. Tina,
Lovely peony, never grew them at trees! We will have blooms by weeks end hopefully!

Given what we saw yesterday the May Apple would today be my favorite spring flower. Trilliums also are.

  2. WOW! The stunning beauty of your blooms is beyond words!! Tree peonies are my most favorite in spring too. They always make me feel happy and festive. On the other hand, I love violets because of their simple charm!
PS Your white star magnolias are so elegant!!

  4. It's gorgeous, Tina! I live visiting you blog on Mondays as it never fails to bring a smile to my face. I'd love to smell its fragrance! My Spring favorite would be Indian Licorice that marks the beginning of Spring at Plantville with its tiny lil' blooms!

  5. I could even smell those beautiful blooms Tina! Mother's peony bushes are covered in buds. I can't wait to get my bouquet when they start to open.
Favorite spring bloom? I guess my tiny Early Louisiana Jonaquils because they were pass-alongs to me; they are heirloom bulbs now; and Mother told me so many stories over the years about my grandmother having these flowers down their path to the mailbox. It's all about memories... :)

  6. Good morning all!

Randy, The trees are a bit different besides the fact they keep a stem all year the blooms are bigger for some reason. They can get up to eye level too. Enjoy your peony blooms. Love those mayapples too.

Sapphire, Thanks so much. Simply adore your painted shells this morning. You are MOST talented.

Joy, Sure wish I could describe a peony's scent. They vary by cultivar but when there is a scent-it is incredible. 'Immaculee' has a scent if you ever see this cultivar. It is a reliable peony and white so it goes with everything.

Chandramouli, Thanks so much. Glad you like the peony. These pics were taken over two days and it was incredible watching it open. It still blooms nicely. Indian licorice-what a great name for a spring plant.

  7. Linda, You are SO right about the memories. Gardens connect us all so rightly so your jonquils are your favorite. I would've guessed bluebonnets though:)

  9. What a beautiful bloom!

You'd think that I'd have peonies here since they are deer resistant. I just can't make up my mind where they fit into my garden to be happy! Someday! :-)

  10. Peonies are soooo spring! I love them too. My peonie bloomed for the first time last year. It was still pretty small. We'll see what I get this year. Love the photo sequence.

  11. A flower and bloggers after my own heart! Peonies are also one of my top spring faves, I have recently become enthralled with the tree peonies and species peonies. They always remind me of art, because kind of like cabbage roses, their petals are so dramatic.

  12. I was delighted to see the tree peony I planted last year survived. It looked so dead. Yours is such a pretty one. I forgot what mine looks like so it will be a surprise when it blooms.

  13. Beautiful, Tina! I can see why this is your favorite spring bloomer. I don't think I could pick a favorite spring bloomer--I love them all.

  14. That is an absolutely lovely bloom. I've never tried growing a tree peony. I should look into replacing some of my roses with TP's.

Peonies are in my top 5 favorites (I could never choose just one:)

I can't pick just one! Peony looks great!

  16. I planted a few peonies last year in the small area in front of the vegie bed and they are coming up, hopefully to have blooms.
    I like a good iris.

  17. Oh what a pretty one, the color, the shape... I don't know if I have one favorite, each time something new blooms it becomes my favorite. I would say the Lilacs are what I've been most excited to see bloom each Spring. They should any day now.

  18. It's tough to beat tree peony blooms. Mine bloomed the other day, I have three or four blooms/buds this year, the most I've had so far on a 5 year old plant.

  19. WOW! That is STUNNING Tina. The whole series of photos & the Tree Peony actually. Love it. Now I want one for sure!!
It's so hard to pick one favorite for the season. So many things are in bloom. (not as many as in your neck of the woods tho)
It has to be any tree in bloom for me tho (can you believe I didn't pick a bulb). It's because I know they'll be leafed out soon after and I love that full, green, lush tree look. I know it's summer (or soon to be).

  20. Good Morning everyone! A bit cloudy today with a nip in the air so a good day to run to the Garden Center to have a look around...

Beautiful pictures of the unfolding peony Tina! I love peony as they remind me of my childhood. We had about half dozen in our yard and they were so old and large that the blooms did not fall over. I can only wonder how old those things must have been.

I have 4 that I planted a few years back and they are getting bigger and fuller of blooms with each passing year! They seem to love where I have them located but some dogwood trees nearby are growing as well and starting to give the peony shade. Saplings of trees are so small when planted and I have a hard time realizing how large they will be one day. I hope the peony will be okay with shade.

As far as a spring favorite, I love them all…

  21. It will be a while yet before my tree peony blooms here is Massachusetts, but all three seems to have come through the winter in good shape. I guess my favorite flower is the old fashioned rose, because it is hardy and romantic. We have more than 70 varieties and the last Sunday in June we have the Annual Rose Viewing. The 20 herbaceous peonies are still in bloom then too.

  22. Tina, what great images of tree peony! I believe that tree peony flowers are among the prettiest in the whole plant world. I have one plant and it looks like I'll have its blooms open very soon.

  23. Tina, you have captured your peonies very nicely. I love these blooms...so "old world", don't you think? I can't grow them, but my mother has them littered throughout her acreage. Fantastic!

My favorite spring flowers are lilies...lilies of any kind!

  24. We have yet to travel to peony territory in the garden. Maybe eventually. :-)-- Randy

  25. Love the way you captured it opening. So pretty...my favorites changed from day to day, lol.

  26. Such a purty-pin-peony;-) I have a couple of bushes but no trees. I would like to look into getting one...in fact, I'm gonna google it now;-)

  27. Oh, how pretty Tina. I love the tree peonies. I planted one last spring and for so,e reason it died over the winter. Has me bummed out ;-)

  28. So very hard to pick a favorite. Sometimes I think it is what is in bloom at the time. My peonies are just now setting buds, and they have me really excited because it appears to have so many more buds this year. I know they don't like to be moved, so the longer in one spot the more they bloom. Your pink one is gorgeous.

I love the daffodis when they are blooming because they were my Granny's. But then the iris begin blooming about the time the daffodils stop, and the first iris that I have blooming are always my Granny's plain white iris with no ruffle. They bloom earlier than all my hybrids. Granny's are blooming right now, but no others are. While the iris are blooming they are my favorite. Then about the time the iris stop blooming my daylilies start, and all at once they are my favorites.

Do I have your head spinning?

  29. What a superb series of photos. I love peonies, too. they grew at my house when I was a child and had been there for many years before we moved in. I have been eyeing my garden seriously, looking for a sunny spot so I can grow some. My favorite flower is the columbine. I like everything about it!

  30. Oh, I'm getting very excited about the peonies looking at this post!! Mine are still a few weeks away. I have a new favorite - a type of narcisssus that I haven't identified yet, but the scent of it is making me swoon every time I walk out the door!

  31. I love spring and there aren't any plants I don't like...but I have my favorites. Phlox pilosa is blooming along with golden ragworts and foam flowers...They all look splendid together~gail

  33. I'm with ya! Peony is my all time favorite too! :) I think ours will bloom earlier than usual this year because we had such warm weather a few weeks ago... well see... I'd rather they just bloom longer than earlier but I love them all the same!

  34. So pretty, love how you gave us a progression of the bloom from bud to fully open blossom. :)

  35. What a gorgeous peony. That last photo especially is a stunner.

It's really hard to pick a favorite spring flower, but I pick bearded iris. So elegant and beautiful, and if it's a fragrant one even better.

  36. very nice but my favorite would have to be the amazing lilac.

  37. I LOVE peonys....they have just bloomed but I was dismayed to find that almost every last bloom was eaten--snapped off by a large hungry animal. Any ideas what kind of pest eats these lovely blooms? We are in Vancouver - lots of variety of animals. I don't think deer eat them...what about skunks or squirrels?

    ReplyDelete
  38. Hi Anonymous in Vancouver, I've never heard of peony blooms being snapped off like this other than deer eating them or other things in the garden. Hmmm, food for thought. Perhaps squirrels with a very fine taste? I have no idea. Maybe someone else will know. Such a shame too!
