The Yellow Button Mum Hedge

DSCN0384
Got mums? Boy do I have mums here in Tiger Gardens. The mums are not all that special but they make up for any shortcomings by being bright and prolific. I wonder if those two are connected somehow? Bright and prolific? Hmmmm. Five years ago I got a start of these beautiful yellow button mums (I don't know the botanical name) from a fellow master gardener on a master gardener garden tour and wow have they really taken off. Before I knew it I had planted whole hedges of these mums.

The longest stand of them is in the Northside Shrub Border. This border is 100 feet long by 11 feet wide but does spread out on the ends in order to accommodate  the property boundary. When I first began this garden back in 2003 it seemed like the area was so big and would never fill up with flowers. Now it seems I have run out of space and it is all thanks to these mums-they helped fill the area quickly.

These mums will easily grow to four or five feet tall and will spread very rapidly if left to their own devices. I have mine planted in front of the shrubs in order to provide a step down from the shrubs to the perennials in this garden. When not in bloom these mums provide a great cushion of green foliage that does not mind the heavily shaded and dry conditions in this garden. This mum is a keeper and I am enjoying all of them this fall....

in the garden....

These being passalong mums are some of the best mums in my mind. Anyone who visits Tiger Gardens this time of the year leaves with a good sized clump so that the cheer can be spread around-from one master gardener to another. Thanks Joy!

We will be taking a break here at In the Garden but will surely see you all next year. Happy Holidays to all!

  3. Your yellow mums are beautiful---not at all like the "grocery store" variety we usually see---so loose and graceful.

  8. Your garden looks fantastic. Mine is all covered in snow. The mums look great! They would make a perfect bouquet to brighten up my house at this dark time of the year.

  9. Your mums are very bright and cheerful. It's still oddly warm and green (at least the grass) in Maine so it's hard to believe that the holidays are approaching. Happy holidays to you and your family, Tina!

  11. The final sure fire flower for late fall. Very nice. I depend on the Minnwhatever hybrids developed to withstand life here on the tundra. :)

  15. 4 to 5' tall?? Wow ~ I've never seen mums that tall Tina! Maybe because we don't get the moisture you do? or have as long a growing season?? They look amazing. Nice to still have some color in the garden too.
Have a great blog break and happy holidays to you & your family. When you come back, it will almost be time to garden again!

  16. Tina, the yellow always brings a brightness to a garden. I love yellow grasses/foliage, for even on the darkest day, they offer a wonderful glow.

Hope all is well with you and your family this holiday season. Diana

  17. Have some happy holidays yourself, Tina. You know I also have those mums, don't know the name, have never seen them anywhere else except Mouse Creek, where they were given to the owner, Ruth and in your garden. They are amazing, and still blooming!

  20. Your mention of mums is so true!
"they make up for any shortcomings by being bright and prolific" It is December but I find some mums in bloom in my small garden as well as in my neighborhood. They surely bring delight to us when most of other flowers are gone.

  21. Cheerful, cheerful! Love that yellow. My mums are frozen solid and crusty brown right now. I also love your bee picture at the header :-) Have a great holiday.

  22. Those mums are so alive even when the leaves below them are all dry. We have yellow mums a bit of those size but they are creeping and not standing like yours. Yours seem to look like Gomphrena globosa when seen from afar, yellow buttons. Maybe they can be trained to be beautiful spray mums also.

  23. What a creative soul you are. Never thought of using tall mums as a hedge. Go to enjoy passalongs and MG tours.

  24. Yipes, they are some bright blooms. My mums are similar in size, but are lime green, and I thought they were bright. Don't they add some real color at this time of year? And all mixed with the rest of the garden in browns and grays. You have a lot of them too.
