Two Planters and a Pot

I am really bad about finding plants and buying them in numbers of 3. Why 3 I don't know as I am an "even and balance it out" type of person. Once getting the plants from the Garden Center and to my Georgia home, I have no idea where some will end up.

I made two identical planters along the pathway of the garden separating a higher level of the garden to a lower level of the garden. I will talk more about the garden levels another time. Here I have highlighted the two planters for you to see where they are located.

Now lets move in for a closer look at the two planters from their start.
I made the planters with scalloped, curved border stones that once were used as borders elsewhere in the yard. They are now planters! The pea gravel is the pathway below. I came home with 3 Blue Daze plants and 6 Wave Petunias. Hey, I got the Petunias in an even amount even though I only needed 4 of them. I also had 2 Red Star plants (Cordyline Australis) and some white Alyssum seed.

Of course the center holds the Red Star and the Daze was placed in front of it to flow over the 3 inch wall. Two Petunias were placed on either side of the Daze and the Allyssum seed was scattered within the Petunia and Daze.

In a matter of weeks, the Daze and Petunia were blooming as well as the white Allyssum.
Both planters are now so full that you can no longer see the brick border of the planter.
The colors all work well with each other making for a beautiful Pink, Blue and White planter. If only the Blue Daze were not a morning bloomer and would stay open all day long. Arggg....Now what did I do with the remaining odd ball blue Daze and Petunia you ask? Well, put them in a pot of course! This entailed another trip to the garden center for a Spike plant for the center of the pot. I had the large pot collecting dust in the shed so I did not have to buy that item on this trip.
Just as the other planters, I put the Blue Daze to the front of the centered Spike plant with the wave Petunia on either side of the daze. To my surprise a Hyacinth bean was in the pot so a vine grew in time. I just love surprises!
This pot is on the opposite side of the garden so it kind of encloses the garden with color at this end and ties the colors in with the other side of the garden.

If you find yourself buying things in odd numbers like three, do like me and make TWO PLANTERS AND A POT, In the Garden...

  1. Those came out nice! I'd love some of those half planters around here. I think they look sooo nice going up a hill. Might do it with my little arbor trees....mower guard!

  2. Hi Skeeter, you crack me up. But the planters all look great, you have a super green thumb and how the heck did you draw those circles around the planters? BTW, I have fixed the script problems on the wordpress blog if you would like to come and try and read it again. It should be much easier and I think I have figured out how to do that on all the posts from now on. It was hard to redo the older ones. I had to re write the html code for the whole *&%$#@ thing! And I don't even know html code, but I looked at it to see what was different in the good ones and the daylily post and kept fooling with it until it worked. I just wanted you to be able to read my posts!
Frances, very tired but very smart S-M-R-T (thank you Homer Simpson);->

  3. I just recently bought some of the blue daze myself. It is beautiful and functional though a bit self-protective. I mean about hiding its blooms during the heat of the day. They live like a Floridian should.

  4. Great color combination Skeeter! I like your circular planters with the gravel path. Everything is still looking quite fresh & healthy in your garden. I always buy in odd combinations too.

  5. That was a really neat idea and they look great! Don't you know in gardening odd numbers really make it even?:) So that is why you buy in threes. Only thing in life like that. Makes it more balanced and I love the two planters and a pot...

  6. Good Saturday morning Garden Bloggers!

Dawn, I like to take something discarded and use it for a purpose not intended. A bit of difference I reckon. I know I would have fun with Freecycle if only the Saint would let me sign up. lol...

Frances, Thanks, I drew the circles in the edit room. I right click on the pic and select edit then go from there... I dont know how to do much but can draw a circle and black out a face if need be. I have no idea how to crop anything though... I am glad you have your words cleared up at Fairegarden. I thought maybe it was my eyes as no one else had made a comment. At my age things go out of whack so quickly it seems. They eyes went over night and no gray hairs as of yet but I know one morning I will wake up and scream at all the gray that will pop up over night... lol.... Fairegarden is looking better with each tweak....

Walk2write, I like the way you describe the blue Daze! Live like a Floridian with hiding during the day. Too funny.... It is so pretty when it is open, kind of like a Morning Glory...

Perennialgardener, I was pleased with the color combination as well. Things are now starting to fizzle a bit though. The petunias and alyssum have just about played out on me. Blue Daze is still looking good. I had such success with that combination that I may go with the same thing next year. Ah, so I am not the only odd ball then... lol...

  7. Tina, I think it is a bit strange I seem to buy in threes but now it seems I am not alone! Maybe, I am not such an Odd Ball after all. LOL With my recent purchases this past weekend, I did not buy in three’s. I wonder if I was trying to prove something to myself. hummmm….

  8. I always buy 3, 5 or 7! Probably some rule of garden design I remember from Fine Gardening Magazine! But now I look at a plant and see if I can divide it to get what I want...I am on a garden plant diet! Nice planters and containers!

  9. I am one of those odd people. I like to plant in threes too. I have no idea why(-: Your planters and pot look wonderful(-:

  10. Gail, Plant Diet.. Now that is funny and like all my diets, that one fails me also. I just bought some new plants. Did you know we are in a drought? lol.... Yep, I should stick with the plant diet, well, for now anyway… Glass of water anyone???

Cindee, I finally have concluded, I am not the only Odd Ball out there! Must be a garden thing because in the house, all is even... lol... I even (pun tended) have two cats!

  11. Skeeter you have put together some very nice looking arrangements! Odd numbers evoke a sense of nature and even numbers are more formal in garden design. It works for planting and for pruning trees as well. If you look at tree with 4 limbs it will look less natural than one with 3 or 5.

  12. Great looking planters, Skeeter. The pot just finishes it off. 3 just looks better as it is balanced. Even decorating the walls in your home the rule of thumb is odd numbers.
Hope you get some more much needed rain.

  13. Dave, Thanks, I never thought of the odd number in tree limbs but you are right. They do look better in odd numbers... how did the Red Star fair in the pot you planted for your mother a while back? Mine still looks really well thus far. This is a new plant to my garden so will be interesting to see how she winters...

Lola, I balance things out on the walls in the house. Usually something large in the middle of a wall with something smaller on either side. So yes, in numbers of three again... humm, maybe I should change my lucky number to 3... lol.... No rain since Wed but that was a good one and the grass is so green now. Weatherman reported tonight that we are still over 5 inches behind for year that plus about the same for the past two years.... One day we will make a come back. Still ocean storm season so there is still hope for decent rainfalls....

  14. I really like all those before and after pictures. Those little petunias are wonderful!

  15. Parsec, I like to take before and after pictures in order to keep up with progress. I think button snapping is a great asset and reference... Ah, you should see the before and after pictures of my cats hair cuts.. lol...

  16. Skeeter,

It's doing really good, but the other plants are beginning to fade. It lasted through the summer though!

  17. Great Dave, I had never seen the Red Star before then picked up the two and then soon afterwards, saw your posting on them in the container you made. That was so ironic...

  18. Very pretty Skeeter and on balancing things in the house, as Lola said, I have read that the best way to go is in 3's.
