I had some strange looking plant growing in the Butterfly Island of my Georgia Garden. It was out of the way so I decided to allow it to grow and see what happens with it.Here is a close up of a leaf. I kind of wonder if it could be Poke Salad also known as Poke Weed? I looked it up and it does resemble Poke Salad but I am not sure. Any guesses? It looks like it is growing straight up into another world. Jack and the Beanstalk come to mind. I wonder WHERE IS JACK, In the Garden...
haha Where is Jack indeed!! It is not Poke weed but I have not idea what it is!
ReplyDeleteit doesn't look like pokeweed to me (though common names may be different by region).
ReplyDeleteDon't know either. I've been watching (and debating with son and husband) over whether our weed is poke or not!

Hmmm,
ReplyDeleteit is really tall. I am not familiar with Southern plants. I will be curious to find out what it is. There are a lot of informed garden bloggers out there!

Skeeter,
ReplyDeleteClearly NOT Pokeweed! I'm not 100% sure but it might be a wild lettuce. If it blooms like a lettuce then that is it. Some wild lettuces bloom yellow and others purple.
Gee, at first it looks like poke but it is not because no red stems. It kind of looks like a Hookeri primrose? Not sure though because the ones that volunteered themselves in my garden are not that tall. It will bloom though then you'll know.
ReplyDeleteIt's not in the brugmansia family is it? Those leaves resemble those of a brug. Be sure to get a picture of the flowers.
ReplyDeleteIf I were you, I'd be looking for a goose with golden eggs:) This looks a little like a plant I saw in a prairie area recently, but it's probably not native to Georgia. Maybe when it blooms, someone will recognize it.
ReplyDeleteI have no idea either but it sure is interesting and worthly of keeping,
ReplyDeleteWell now Skeeter you sure do come up with the puzzles and I wish I could help you but I can't. The first thing I thought of that was tall and skinny was the century plant but your puzzle does not even beging to look like that plant. Hope someone will enlighten us all as to the name of it.
ReplyDeleteI think I've had something similiar growing on my place, but sorry, I don't know what it is! I just know it's not pokeweed. :)
ReplyDeleteHello everyone! I am in TN enjoying some time with family and friends so will keep this short...
ReplyDeleteTina, my dad really enjoyed being surprised by the "Touch me nots" He did yell out a good scream didnt he? hee hee. He sure did enjoy your gardens and wish he could see more but the hips dont allow. He was capitvated by the Silver berry bushes also!
I have no idea what this plant could be and wow, I have yet another mystery as no one else seems to know either. Dont we all love a good Mystery? lol. I had several of these pop up here and there throughout several gardens but pulled them. I left this one and we will see what happens in the days to come. I hope it does bloom so maybe someone will know its name. An interesting weed or what ever just as is... :-)
Back to Family now....
No, it's not poke. I'd recognize that anywhere.
ReplyDeleteSorry I can't help you ID it.
Do enjoy the time in Tn. So glad you got to go.
Could it be an Ironweed?
ReplyDeleteIt's a mystery to me, but how exciting!
ReplyDeleteIt looks like a weed, but who knows it might turn into a tree...
ReplyDelete~bangchik
No idea what it is either, but it sure is tall!
ReplyDeleteJack reminds me of New York Ironweed (Vernonia noveboracensis) Skeeter...it's blooming here and has a beautiful purple bloom! gail
ReplyDeleteOh wow, I hope it is iron weed! It looks beautiful in the pictures i saw on an internet search! If it is iron weed, I will regret pulling the other ones out of the ground! Sigh.... Thanks Lola and Gail for the tip on iron weed. I will keep you posted on it if it blooms....
