What You Don't Want to See in Your Birdhouses!

I have heard of snakes taking up residence in birdhouses but have never seen it. Skeeter has and has the picture to prove it! I think no birds would stand a chance of surviving should they decide this is where they want to make their home! Do you suppose the rat snake had dinner in mind when it took up residence here?

in the garden....

  1. Actually the snake had already had something to eat. You could see the bump in its belly. It was not the baby bluebirds though as they had already fledged from the house. Snakes don’t eat every day. They eat something then find a spot to nap to let it digest. I think this one had just found a nice quiet dark spot to nap after eating what I assume to be a frog or vole...

The Saint found the snake by reaching up into the house to remove the old nesting materials! He jumped back and said to me, “I think I just touched a snake” Needless to say, we get the ladder and look into the house before cleaning it in between broods of birds now…. One summer, we had three broods of babys in that house. We normally get two per year….

  2. Definitely check your birdhouses before cleaning! I bet it was a shock to the Saint to get a handful of snake when he was expecting bird nest! I can imagine that.
