Adventure in the Garden

The other day the young'un and I went on a small adventure of sorts. A local church next to the post office had some pretty yellow flowers planted near the front. I was thinking how they were almost the color of the fire hydrant. Seems as though there is a lot of yellow.

As we progressed on our adventure we passed Camp Blanding; which was once a thriving military base. Now it's a training base for the National Guard. Notice the color of yellow at the gate.

No yellow here, but if you look closely you can see an airplane. There is also a tank and other vehicles.

There is no yellow here either, but pretty flowers on the shrub that has been trimmed. I think it is a hibiscus. I don't understand why anyone would want to trim such a lovely shrub.

Further on into our journey we crossed the St. Johns River. Young'un ran an errand and we started back. You guessed it, crossed the St. Johns River (which is 16,300' long) again. lol. In the distance you can see Jacksonville Naval Air Station (NAS). To the right of that you can see Plalatka on a clear day.

The next morning I decided I would visit an old friend. Before I left I took the picture of my side yard where the Rose Garden is located. The first rose (Black Cherry) is a very dark red. The second rose pictured (Lovestruck) is pink. As I got closer to them I noticed that the blooms looked different. They seemed to sparkle. I suddenly realized it 'dew still on the roses'. I immediately thought of the song.

"In the Garden"
I come to the garden alone while the dew is still on the roses and the voice I hear...

  1. Hi Lola, so nice to see you posting here, well done! I envy your roses too, very lovely. There was yellow on the curbing in that first photo too! What a great eye you have to see the color echo.

  11. Hi Frances,
Thank you for the nice compliments. I really like this rose. It has bloomed all summer. Yes, yellow seemed to be the color of the day.

  12. Good Morning Anonymous,
Glad you like the rose. Yes, that bridge is quite long. I hope boy #2 has a nice trip. I know you need the rain but it's not nice to have to be out in it.

  17. Hi Dawn,
Yes the rose does look like silk. The outer petals are so red they look almost black. It was a gift so it is special. We cross this bridge every time we go to this big town.

  22. You would make a great movie director, Lola, showing us the story through the camera lens and behind the pictures. I sense some sadness and anxiety about the future here but also the working out of a strong faith. Thanks for showing me a bit of FL. I'm familiar with that side of it too. We used to live on Anastasia Island and got used to crossing many bridges.

  23. Hi Lola, great post and really enjoyed the reminder of that lovely hymn that I had not thought of in such a very long time. Have a great day.

Tina, hope you are starting to feel better and if not, it may be time to see the doctor as it may be an infection that will not clear up on its own. Talked to Dawn last night on the phone and she is not feeling well at all right now. How was the time at the water place and did Mr Fix It get his award?

  24. Hi Mom, Still a bad headache. Bad time to be sick. Great Wolf Lodge was nice. Yes, Mr. Fix-it got his Recruiter ring. A proud day for us all. Will probably post on it at some point. Just trying to get things in order for Thanksgiving and so on. It all takes time, as you know. Give hugs and kisses to Joshua. ttyl

  25. I think I'm in love....with that Black Cherry Rose. Last year I grew a chocolate cherry sunflower and I'm thinking how pretty they'd look together. Nice to "meet" you Lola....

  26. Hi Lola - so nice to see you contributing here. I LOVE that old hymn and am humming the tune already. A sweet older woman at church used to sing it so beautifully, without any musical accompaniment, and in perfect pitch. It's a happy memory.

  27. Great adventures you took me on this morning Lola! The Rose is a beauty and the hymn brings back many memories of sitting in church with my grandmothers singing along! I may have to get my mom to play that one on the piano next time I am home. She loves to play the old hymns.

Beautiful Rose's you have and the dew just makes it sparkle! I never had any luck with roses and envy all that do...

I will be busy cleaning the last of the windows in the house today amongst other fun things. A good day for this as it is cloudy and dreary out today…

    Have a good Day!

I was really surprised how beautiful the roses looked that morning. They were actually glittering. The camera did not do justice to them.

  34. A special Hi to Tina,
Thank you for allowing me the privilege of posting on here. It is a learning experience. That is a lovely bridge & when on top you can see for miles. I've really enjoyed the roses as they were a gift.

  37. Walk2Write,
Aww shucks, no movie directer here. I just point & shoot at what I think is pretty. Only say what's in my heart. Some times that is the only way some of us have to convey our feelings.

  38. Hi Jean,
Glad you liked the reminder. That is an old dear song I think all of us has at one time or another sang it. Most of the older hymns are the best.

  39. JGH,
It's not hard to fall in love with that one. J&P has it. They sure are good on their plants. I really like this one as the outer edges of each petal is so dark it looks black. It has bloomed it's little heart out all summer.
    Good meetin you too.

  40. Blosson,
Isn't that the sweetest old hymn that you ever heard. I think the "Title" of it is so appropriate for this blog. And we have the loveliest flower {so to speak} that allows us the privilege to post on her blog. Isn't she the greatest.

  41. Skeeter,
I'm glad you enjoyed the venture. You should try this rose. It is special. I had given up on roses till I received this one. It has changed my mind.
Isn't it nice to have the lovely memories of our grandparents like that. Not too much memory makers these days.
Don't over do it with the windows.

  45. Hi Lola,
I enjoyed looking at your pics and love that song, too. I noticed that big truck carrying vehicles next to you somewhere, and got a little shiver, as I do not like driving next to or passing vehicles that big, unless the road is straight and flat.

I don't consider myself a writer, but I love to talk, and talk I do on blogs! LOL

  46. Oops! Tina, I like the pics and song.
If I read the other comments I may not be as confused as to who did what, but I'm trying to hurry up and catch up with my blogging.

  47. Sue, You got it right. Today is Lola's day. Thanks everyone! I know it is confusing sometimes. She will be under her own name next month.

Lola, My pleasure for you to post. I am enjoying lots of time off and in the garden...:)

  49. Lola, Thanks for taking us along on your drive...I find myself noticing little details in my surroundings, too, that I used to take for granted.
Your roses are so beautiful; they certainly would make a person want to sing!

Enjoyed your post; hope you will be back to share with us again soon.

  50. Donna,
Palatka is not that far from us. Just a nice ride. Yes, the St. Johns runs north as does the Tn. River in my hometown.

  51. Hi Sue,
The road/bridge was flat when this big rig was passing. I for sure don't like being near one since one came over on me on a short bridge. Really messed my car up from the post at my left shoulder back pushing me into the bridge abutment therefore messing up the right front tire. Whew, what a mess.

  52. Hello Brenda,
I'm glad you had a chance to take pics of your plants in the rain. That situation does make for some really pretty pics.

  53. Nice post with such pretty flowers! The Garden is one of my favorite hymns.

  54. Hi Rose,
I've really enjoyed doing this post. I like to talk to all the different people. Through Tina's blog I've come to feel like I know most all of you even though I've not met you.
The garden, a common ground for most folks, is the best place to have friends that you can talk to. As we all have that common thread in our lives. Sunshine & happiness & gardening friends is what's it's all about.
